Default Twin Peaks: Original Series or The Return?

I think I lean towards the original series, though it's tough to compare them.

Can't compare them tbh. I love them equally for different reasons. There's something about the original at its best that just can't be beaten - the whole zeitgeist of it, right place right time and all that - but The Return equally has its own merits. The best thing about The Return was that it didn't try to repeat the formula of old.

You strip away that final half of Season 2 and you have everything you could ever want from a TV show. Beyond that the show opens up, there's a lot of good stuff, which is where the movie and the Return comes in. And as much as I love the sheer audacity of both of those, I can't deny they're both a bit patience pushing for me to truly give myself over to.

All are brilliant for their times and not even remotely comparable.

I mean, any two things can at least be a little comparable. I think these two things are different in such a way that a person's taste can easily lean in one direction on which "type" of Twin Peaks they personally respond to more or prefer.

I way preferred The Return, found the majority of the original to be too goofy for me. Whereas The Return was one of the best TV seasons I've seen.

The original series by some distance I would say, especially season 1.

I enjoyed 'The Return' (Event Series) also to some degree, but thought it lacked the original's quirky charm, guess it became a tad too dark/twisted for me especially with 'evil' Cooper (+ apathetic 'Dougie' Cooper did not do it for me.. guess I missed the good ole' cheerful Cooper who only returned at the end).

Were I to rank the seasons, I would give Season One 4.5 stars, Season Two 4 stars and Season 3 ('The Return') 3 stars.

The pilot episode of the original series is the best two hours in the history of television imo.

Having always been more of a Lynch fan than a Twin Peaks fan, I prefer The Return. The original Twin Peaks was revolutionary for TV but by the standards of his films it was Lynch-lite, especially in the episodes not directed by him. The Return is not only like an 18 hour David Lynch movie, it's also one of the best things he's ever done.

I think both are equally great in different ways, and complement each other beautifully. Really, I think of all of them (Seasons 1-2, Fire Walk with Me and The Return) as one entity, each an essential piece of the puzzle. But if I were forced to choose, I'd have to go with the original series.

Malagant hit the nail on the head with "quirky charm". That's what gives the original series the edge for me. It's the perfect mix of everything. Conventional and experimental/surreal, lighthearted and serious, innocent and twisted. It can be cute and funny one moment, quite horrifying the next. Always incredibly atmospheric.

As others mention, difficult to compare. The original may be easier to like (at least until the Laura Palmer plot is resolved), but I do think that in the end The Return is the better series.
