Have any of you gotten the latest WSR yet?

There's a nice article in there that explains far better than I can about all this, but the concept basically was something along the lines of: Each codec has a certain sweet spot of bit rates (and lots of other variables that they need) but given all those variables, they ALL can look great.

That was the gist of it anyways.

Well, that makes sense, why wouldn't it? The problem I have with them using Mpeg2 is the bad publicity and all the FUD it attracts, be it accurate or false. It's a pointless battle, IMO. Use the exact codecs that your competitor is using, and then watch the nay-sayers struggle to come up with a valid argument against it, or how it is still somehow inferior. It would take the steam right out from under them, They'd still all be pointing to some Lion's Gate titles that came out several months ago, never mind the current titles.

It's entirely possible Sony may not use VC-1 at all on their releases.

Sony does provide the tools for Blu-ray. Paramount's usage of MPEG2 is a result of that. Warner has to use a custom software that takes the HD DVD encoding and re-processes it to be BD compatible.

I think Sony is merely rewriting their software for VC-1 encoding to be used by third parties should they so desire.

^ I think your spot on with this conclusion, it could however potentially lead to VC-1 usage if sony likes it, or if its more cost effective as I hear mpeg4 is a beast to fine tune.
