To paraphrase a famous guy, give me physical media or give me death.

most movies on iTunes sit in the $10-20 range even though it’s just a digital copy; for example, you could get Spy on iTunes for $14.99 or buy the Blu-ray for $7.40, which comes with a free digital copy). Or you could just pay $10, get the Blu-ray, and never have to worry about it again (unless all your stuff goes into storage
He just said the Blu-ray is $7.40, then he says pick it up for $10, what?!?

I will stick with physical media until it is gone or I die, whichever comes first. It has also come in handy to back up my uncompressed BDs to hard drives and then run a home media server using PLEX for free.

Original programming is the only real selling point for Netflix and HBO these days.

The actual movie content is pretty abysmal for both companies.

Especially HBO.

My god the movies they premiere on Saturday night are terrible.

...just terrible.

Another thing that people don't think about: what happens if a movie that you really want to watch goes OOP or something bizarre happens involving its availability? The Air Force One example is a good one, but I keep thinking of the various movies (especially horror titles) that eventually go OOP.

I get that for many people, collecting physical media isn't a necessity, but it is very important to those of us who take film seriously.

And the same thing goes for music.

I'm as old school as it gets when it cums to having a personal preference for physical media.

But I must admit, I'm starting to enjoy the option of buying cheap digital copies of movies I like, but don't love or haven't seen and aren't really excited about. My Vudu collection has slowly grown to the point where I've now surpassed 20 codes.

It's great being able to add a film like Arrival to my collection for only $3.

It's great to add a film like Arrival to my UHD, BD, and VUDU collection for $25 and what's more I actually own it on two of those formats. VUDU could shut down tomorrow or my internet could crap out.

The US still is not close to having the infrastructure to support all digital/streaming at this time anyways. I believe in physical copies of things, because when the internet goes down or slows down or the wifi craps out or any number of issues happens...... when that happens.... I go straight to my video games or movies that don't require an internet connection. Of course this could also be that I grew up before the internet era began and all you had in 1994-1995 was beyond shit dial-up.... So, it might be a generational thing not just all the other reasons stated previously.

Very unlikely scenario and even if it happened, no big deal if I lose a few films that I'm not in love with and only paid a few bucks for.

A big physical Blu-ray collection is a burden in some ways, mostly on the wallet, but it's also intensely liberating when it comes to watching whatever I want to watch whenever the mood strikes me.
Ughhh THIS. Everyone I know just watches Netflix, which is very limited. "My kid watches Moana every day."

I prefer to go physical with movies myself, but this article is quite pedestrian and has nothing to say that hasn't been said much before and in more holistic way.

I remember doing some online research in the school library in 1999, it was so painfully slow on those old 56k modems. I didn't get home internet until 2000, and even then it was free dial-up. I didn't get paid broadband until 2003.

How will people know how much stuff you have if you don't have BD cases piled up all over your shelves? If I have to pay 20 bucks for a movie, I want it in a box.

Wanna know what's sad? The county next to mine doesn't have high speed internet. When I heard that on the news as part of a pitch for the latest banana head running for congress, I did a double take. But I can believe it, because there's a company nearby called "In The Sticks Broadband". Cow Country indeed.

Yes, I do a physical media version of that. I buy s/h discs (movies & music) that I think I might like from Amazon Marketplace or from a shop (we have a chain of shops called CEX selling s/h music & movies, I suppose the US have a version of that), usually between £1 & £4, & if I don't like it I give it to a charity shop.

But this is an old argument/debate, I'm a baby boomer (born 1950) & we just like owning stuff. I'm drowning in 'stuff' & in the last couple years have been getting rid of a lot of it...but I'm keeping my discs.

I used to be all about physical media, worried about losing access, etc.
But I realized its really hard to justify all the boxes, trailers before films, changing discs, and higher cost these days.
Now I just keep a handful of discs around in case i lose internet. I wouldn't be worried too much about losing movie access on digital. If one provider shuts down, we still have access via a different provider. all you have to do is sign up and link your movies. You would be talking about a major lawsuit with restitution if we lost access.
If you want to talk quality of discs over digital, fine. But video is nearly caught up and audio has a long way to go but its getting there. Having access to hundreds of titles at the push of a button and all the easy ways to sort your movies is just too good to pass up.

Hiya -- relatively old guy here.

Just wanted to say that there are still people who have no home-based internet connection. We're small in number, but we're committed.

There are many reasons -- some having to do with idle time, insidious data collection, or just plain stubbornness -- but primarily I've become addicted to the idea of being purposeful about the media I consume.

That means I'm not going to turn on the TV and "see what's on" anymore. If I want to watch something badly enough to acquire it, I do so. It takes time and money, and that time and money is symbolic of the fact that I'm not just wasting my time. I genuinely want to see the thing in question.

And if there's nothing I want to watch in my collection, hey, I'll go out or read a book or make some nachos.

What's interesting is the response I get from friends and family. They stop short of calling me insane, but the kind of vehemence in the objections I hear (especially from the young) is remarkable. It's like I've voluntarily surrendered some core component of my 21st century humanity, or some shit.
