It will take time to convert these people.

I remember when I saw the Patriot in SD DVD playing on a Sony Wega like 8-9years ago and I swore that was the shiznit. I always new Blu-ray was amazing, but I really didn't realize how bad SD DVD looked until I my eyes had adjusted to watching blu-ray definition.

Looks pretty good compared to what?! You have nothing to compare it to, so you can't say "this is good enough" because you know what, that title, on BD is going to be incredible!!!!!!!!!!

Like lemmings everyone just goes with the flow.

I do think that most of the THX DVD's upconvert nicely. The majority do look like S**t though.

In a year from now, many, many Americans will finally have HDTVs and will be noticing the difference between 480, 720 and 1080. They will not be happy with upconverts.

"Another worry, according to Robin Harris, an analyst with the Data Mobility Group, is that Blu-Ray adoption will be slow because few people will notice the difference between formats, since many players can neatly "up-convert" DVDs for high-definition sets. As a result, few will opt to replace their entire DVD libraries, as many did with the earlier generation of videotapes."

....just more ill informed rhetoric, disregard.

Give the retailers a little time to get their act together and behind pushing Blu-ray players as the "need to buy technology".

When the first generation plasmas came out they weren't even 720(i) or (p) in resolution, yet the retailers pushed them hard in their advertisements and in-store staff.

When 720 sets came out, the lower resolution sets were referred as "near HD". When 1080 sets came out "full HD" was used to differentiate them from the 720 sets.

For the past couple years the retailers have been making a big effort to convince everyone that their DVD player (which played DVD's perfectly well) wasn't good enough and that you needed an "upconverting" player.

The next step is the pushing of 1080p sets (because they're better then 1080i) and Blu-ray players and movies because they are better then DVD.

If you think about it, Blu-ray having a name totally different than DVD (unlike HD-DVD) should make this last part that much easier. The new pitch line will be "To get the best home movie experience, you need Blu-ray. Its 1080p picture is better then upconverted DVD".

Propaganda for the Ignorant!

But I'm Surprised Forbes would throw this out.

An Obvious Small Skirmish from Anti-Blu Supporters!

I see this article not Significant enough to worry.

There is just Way too Much Blu-ray Momentum Going on.

Retailers will focus more on pushing HD into homes.

Yes People Don't have to Replace all their DVD's, But don't expect them keeping from buying New Movies on BD's.

Geebus man! 900 DVD's?

I knew 3+years ago about hi-def DVD's coming to the mainstream so I didn't buy another SD DVD going back that long (despite the urge).

I sure hope you didn't buy many of those during that last 3+ year period.

Hell have them take a look at Lost, even the HD broadcast version vs the blu-ray. It is an amazing transfer and the best you'll ever see that show. I believe the same could be said for Prison Break.

Exactly! Blu-ray is different. Blu-ray is better. You need Blu-ray.

Good buzz word brands get the biggest bang in sales performance.

I know that I do not have a BD version of SW:Episode 3 to compare to, but I have seen a couple actual BD disc that don't even look as good as this SD disc. Believe me I am no fan of upconverting versus BD, my point was that often the general consumer is too ignorant to better technology to know what they are missing.

"The other interesting discussion is whether we really need a high-definition disc at all. Some people suggested that the latest round of “upconverting” DVD players can turn the 480 lines of resolution on DVDs into a very nice picture on a 720 or 1080 line HD set."

Yeah. But, it seems this opinion always comes from people that haven't spent a few weeks watching HD discs and then going back and looking at that those upconverts.

the more movies i watch on blu the more of a difference i can see.... it's actually kind of sad now because anytime i watch a good movie on dvd i spend half the time thinking how "crappy" the picture is.

lol. it's amazing to look back 9 years or so and remember how awesome dvd was, with great picture, sound, extras..... now we have blu

Magazines and so-called market research firms always make the same mistakes. They never fail to make the assumption that the current situation, marketing, and market will go on with the same conditions and tactics as the day they wrote their story/analysis. They always display a keen ability to make broad statements with little actual data to back it up. Where is the Adams or whatever group that predicted a long term stalemate with most studios going over to neutral this year? SOS.

These supposed journalists and experts are basically well trained at assumption, and you know what they say about that. When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of u and umption.

Seriously, If you can't make up the difference between an upconverted DVD and HD (Blu-Ray) you need to have your eyes checked!

One beauty about Blu-Ray is that it is a different name, a name that wont get confused as compared to hddvd vs upconvert hd. Once hddvd is finally gone more average people will associate Blu-ray with true high definition, as they did with dvd being superior to vhs.
