Just saw it in IMAX a couple of hours ago. I'm interested very much in manned spaceflight and have been since those days I remember when they announced See and Bassett died and when Grissom, White and Chaffee burned up. It was a good film but not a great one IMO. I just felt that they glossed over how much in trouble they were right at or near landing including the alarms what they meant ,the incredibly low fuel and the horizontal velocity being completely pegged at the last few moments etc. I also didn't think that they spent enough on how Aldrin fully expected to be the first out. The way he spoke up at the news conference before the decision was made alluded to this a bit but unless like me you really knew the history

I was not impressed at the appearance of the film in that it just wasn't that sharp.

It was a way different film than I had expected I did however enjoy it and would recommend it if you have an interest in manned spaceflight.

Saw this earlier and thought the movie itself was good, not great. It's a bit distant emotionally and more concerned with Armstrong's psychology than any of the space stuff, really. It's not The Right Stuff or Apollo 13 or From the Earth to the Moon. Visually, I didn't think it really impressed either. A lot of it is handheld. All the spacecraft scenes are shot more viscerally - close up, claustrophobic, and very shaky and difficult to even tell what you're looking at. So I don't know if this'll impress on disc.

And the 65mm IMAX film portions make up maybe 5 minutes on the moon at the end. The aspect ratio did expand to 1.9:1 for those few minutes. Honestly, this movie does not seem well suited to an IMAX screen. I'd think it may play better on a smaller screen. I may check it out again in Dolby.
This makes me concerned. I enjoy the genre a lot but handheld, shaky camera and documentary style-filming is not the best for me tbh. Perhaps I will stick to "Apollo 13" which I think is great. Great if others enjoy it though.

That's why I mention it. I have a friend who gets motion sick from shaky cam movies, so I know there must be others.

Blind buy for me. Doubt I'll get around to seeing it in the theaters. Movies like this I'd just rather watch at home without distractions.

Universal better use the IMAX aspect ratio scenes. It's key!

Yeah, I enjoyed seeing it in IMAX (laser projection but not a huge sized screen) but I knew from reviews much of it would look very grainy and rough, and they also kept artifacts from the film they scanned like stray hairs in the final picture. The shaky cam stuff fit the flight sequences I felt, though was annoying in domestic dialogue scenes.

So that extended preview they had before M:I - Fallout was most of the IMAX scenes?

Yes, the lunar scenes and liftoff from the surface of the moon are the only imax scenes however I’d say the implementation was very effective. It made the impact of actually finally being on the Moon feel otherworldly. I don’t know that it would have worked as well if there had been other scenes with imax cameras. The scene goes on a bit longer than that preview though and the ratio reveal is great!

I could not agree more. I was in New York this weekend for a concert and figured I would see this at Lincoln Square IMAX, which is a huge 100’x80’ screen. I loved the movie, but the IMAX wasn’t worth it just for those couple minutes at the end. It almost felt awkward watching it on that big of a screen.

I thought that it was interesting that little imperfections, like what looked like film gate flaws along the edges of the frame would randomly appear (accentuated more from seeing the movie on an IMAX screen). It will be curious to see how this translates to UHD and what will get some folk a tad bent out of shape over. I for one, was going ape shit over the overuse of the handheld camera shakiness during some of the dialogue scenes between Neil and his wife (aargh, make it stop!)

Hoping to get the detailed release information soon. Dolby Vision HDR, and Dolby Atmos will make the UHD disk instant demo material.
