Universal Studios First Man 4K UHD (2018)

Quote:
On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight. A visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film explores the triumphs and the cost—on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

I saw this last night in Liemax. I enjoyed it. I think people may need to temper their expectations about the aesthetics. The vast majority of the film is shot handheld, very shaky, and on 16mm. And a large part of that is closeups on faces... in 16mm. So those that like crisp, digital looking imagery will be very disappointed. 35mm is used sparingly for establishing shots and exteriors. And the 65mm IMAX film portions make up maybe 5 minutes on the moon at the end. The aspect ratio did expand to 1.9:1 for those few minutes. Honestly, this movie does not seem well suited to an IMAX screen. I'd think it may play better on a smaller screen. I may check it out again in Dolby.

Yeah, Dolby Cinema for us tomorrow; only a single show at our local AMC, all others in IMAX.

The closer this gets to release and the more the marketing ramps up for it, my enthusiasm keeps dwindling. I dunno why. Probably still seeing it this weekend in Laser IMAX though, unless I get talked into El Royale.

I got to see this (over a week ago) at a sneak preview and thought it was one of the best "space story" movies ever told (and I loved Apollo 13). It may not be the best-looking UHD ever, but there are definitely some "OLED black" moments (pretty obvious with all the space shots) and the final moon landing (shot in IMAX) will be glorious if they open up the AR on UHD. I also expect some stellar immersive sound on this one (some of the "in-capsule" scenes are terrifying)! Definitely a day 1 purchase for me.

Nice. I instantly got that vibe from watching the trailer. Really looking forward to watching this one. It appears to be the most engrossing space movie since Interstellar and it has Damien Chazelle at the helm. Can't wait.

*fingers crossed* on a low amount of vertigo inducing sequences.
