So if starwars comes in HD it wont sell well. there are certain catalog titles that will always sell big numbers SW is one and i reckon LOTR will be another.
Put it this way, when people know you can buy LOTR or SW on Blu Ray they will know its the format to choose.

In truth perhaps LOTR and DK would be a combo that would ahem 'turn the tide'.

I dont think DK on its own is enough.

Trust me Star Wars has some beyond loyal fans that will buy a format just to see they're movies. But Star Wars is the exception of course

im not saying it won't sell well, but a lot of people are going to say, ive already got star wars on dvd, ill buy movies I don't already have on blu-ray, but I'm not replacing my 100+ dvds, thats too expensive for the difference in quality (remember not everybody is a HT enthusist). thats why im saying the movie that really pushes hidef is going to probably be a day-and-date like the matrix was for dvd.

point #2 about it having to be a day-and-date are the titles that are huge catalogs that have potential to be big movers (indy, star wars, lotr, back to the future, etc.) they all would be boxsets and you gotta a much harder time convincing people to spend 60-125 bucks replacing a box set that they already own on dvd vs. just replacing a single movie like batman begins.

nobody knew before the matrix was released that it was going to be what pushed dvd. id say we won't know it til its right on top of us.

criteria that will push hd forward in "The Matrix" of HDM is

-quality transfer
-action packed (the notebook or titanic will not push hdm, but dk could)
-lots of interactivity
-it has to make people go "whoa! they can do that and i can own that in my home."

trust me, i am that fan, i got my senior pictures taken as a sith lord.

i frequent starwars.com and theforce.net often and i know that there would be thousands of people that would make the jump, even if all they owned was an sdtv, simply because it was a new version of star wars.

however, thousands of people will not equal mass adoption and even a couple of million blu-ray supporters will not equal mass adoption. its gotta be a day-and-date that blows j6p away when he seems a demo as hes walking through best buy or that blows friedns of blu-ray owners away when they watch it on blu-ray and makes them go, "its well worth a couple hundred for that."

A summer of exclusively Blu-ray blockbusters will drive the masses to adopt Blu-ray. They will have no other choice if they want to purchase the movie.

I would think it would be something like Indy 4 or Harry Potter 7 (or possibly the Hobbit as someone else mentioned).

Some sort of huge series that gets it's last disc done in a "completely made for Blu-ray" fashion.

LotR or SW would need to be outstandingly blatant visual improvements over an upscaled version. I'm not sure how possible that is. Every review I've seen says 2001 is spectacular, but I'm guessing it's going to need to be a newer film that is filmed from scratch with Blu-ray in mind that really creates that "gotta have it".

Unfortunately there isn't a Matrix or LotR on the horizon (in my opinion) - even HP isn't there since it's 7 movies, which is a lot for many people.

I would much rather have the 89 Batman then Begins or Dark Knight.

I don't think Dark Knight is going to be that big or that huge. Nolan fails as an action director and it isn't going to make a fraction of what Spider-Man 3 and Transformers have, and neither of those crappy movies made HD mainstream, neither will this crappy movie

I've figured it out. Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here it's the war room."

A black and white political satire about the end of the world would sell huge!!!

Not to go off topic, from the trailer, what I've seen in the script, and from how little I liked Begins, I have a pretty good indicator. It might surprise me, but I'm not holding out hope.

But like I said, I don't this movie is going to make a big enough splash to help out Blu-Ray. Its just going to be another release.

I still prefer The Matrix trilogy any day.
Sorry, but only the first Matrix was good.

Sequel to Batman Begins starring Cristian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as The Joker.

i think its going to do around 300k on its first week, which is far from making a splash. but i do think it will sell a few blu-ray player, just not through it into mass market like the matrix did.

LOTR LOTR

don't get me wrong, Dark Knight is going to do very well, but it doesn't have the bluray selling potential that LOTR has. LOTR has a wide and diverse demographic fan base--kids to adults. And people know it's good and has lots of replay value.

But they already own LOTR, may have even bought it twice already

None of us knows what the major breakthrough title will be. TDK will be gigantic, but it's something that hits huge and becomes a phenomenon unexpectantly

Keep in mind as well: The Matrix was available on DVD that September, 3 months before it his VHS. That was 3 months of Christmas type shopping for people to ddrool over it for

I don't know about "mainstream," but I Am Legend will certainly break all then-standing records when it comes out. It'll be the first major day-and-date blockbuster after all the recent news that fits the early adopter & gamer demographic and has a lot of audio-visual appeal. I could see it selling 500,000 in a matter of weeks.
