The Network Blu-rays were as little as 3 or 4 quid last year from Amazon

Kino Lorber have released Region As of Murder, both versions of Blackmail and The Paradine Case. Plus The Ring, Champagne, The Farmer's Wife, The Manxman and The Skin Game are coming out later this year. It would be good if Network could pick these up too.

[QUOTE=justwannaboogie;16786304]It would look nice on a shelf I'll admit but I'm happy with what I have currently. Just need to import the Criterions and other overseas releases. I asked BFI if there was any chance of releasing Notorious and they gave me a hard no, it's frustrating that we haven't had essential releases like that yet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I highly recommend the US release of 'To Catch A Thief'- same great picture quality but stacked with bonus material completely missing from the UK release... Audio Commentary: Hitchcock Film Historian Drew Casper, often sounding as if reading his comments, discusses the VistaVision process, the score, the color palette, shooting locales, Hitchcock's career and style, the specific technical merits of the shoot, the parallel between the physical and metaphorical chases, the work and make-up of the cast, and even going so far in-depth to discuss how a slight angling of the credits, combined with their color, suggests the film's duality between light and bubbly motifs and darker elements. This plays as if a college film class lecture; film fans will be delighted with the education. A Night with the Hitchcocks (480p, 23:22): On November 19, 2008 at the University of Southern California, two members of the Hitchcock family -- granddaughter Mary Stone and daughter Pat Hitchcock -- field questions from USC students, the event moderated by Dr. Drew Casper. Unacceptable Under the Code: Censorship in Hollywood (480p, 11:49): A history of Hollywood's moral or "production" code and a look at Hitchcock's work contrasted against it with emphasis on To Catch a Thief's suggestive elements. Writing and Casting To Catch a Thief (480p, 9:03): As the title suggests, an examination of the film's quality of writing (reinforcing the production code concerns), a cut scene due to budget restraints, and acting. The Making of To Catch a Thief (480p, 480p, 16:54): A quality overview piece that offers an examination of shooting both in France and on the Paramount lot, filming in VistaVision, costuming, the script, the acting, the process of filming various scenes, the possibility of a different ending, conflicts with the censorship board, the score, and more. Behind the Gates: Cary Grant and Grace Kelly (480p, 6:12): A brief overview of the careers of the two To Catch a Thief actors and their on-screen chemistry. Alfred Hitchcock and To Catch a Thief: An Appreciation (480p, 7:32): A look at Hitchcock's style, this film's structure, the director's personality, the picture's innuendo, his filmmaking techniques, and his granddaughter's study of his films. Edith Head: The Paramount Years (480p, 13:44): The world-famous designer is the focus of this retrospective piece. If You Love To Catch a Thief, You'll Love this Interactive Travelogue (480p/1080p, 0:55): This piece opens with a brief look at the importance of the French Riviera in both the film and for Director Alfred Hitchcock. Users may then, via a high definition screen, select several key areas around the Mediterranean and learn more about the locales, the narrative playing over clips from the film. To Catch a Thief Theatrical Trailer (1080p, 2:13). Galleries (1080p): Movie, Publicity, Visitors to the Set, and Production. |

The blame is on Disney who pretty much hate sub-licensing outside of the US (they barely do it in the US to begin with). If you're region-locked, the region free MGM release has gone down considerably in price since the Criterion; it might not be the new master, but, it's decent enough for an older one.

I take it then the extras are exactly the same across all the discs and nothing has been added?

So I did a little digging as I know I swapped out the disc of 'To Catch A Thief' in the UK film tin can version for the US disc for a reason...the bluray disc that came in the tin collection is missing all extras and it seems (from what I have read on here) that the UK version released on its own does have the extras. ![]() |

I just watched Marnie (1962) for the first time last night.
My God what an awful film. The Blu-ray is in poor quality, with poor sound and a dodgy picture. A remastering is clearly needed. But the film itself is a complete mess. The question I can't help but ask throughout most of the film: why the hell does Sean Connery actually care about Tippi Hedron's character??? I just don't see it. He seems to be intrigued by a mystery but it is hard at times to see whether there actually is one. Connery is a great actor but perhaps because I associate him with Bond all the time I just think it farcical for him to be brought into all this. He is far too much a man for it to be realistic. Then you have the bizarre reasons for her stealing, calculated and planned stealing by the way - not the stealing of a warped mind. The 'sailor and mummy' flashback scene seems incredibly tame, even by 60s standards. The shooting of the horse - is that meant to represent the final breaking point? (also I had no idea they did hunting in the USA). And then the fact that she is scared of the colour red - brought up several times at the beginning of the film and then completely forgotten in the second half. By the time I was back in Baltimore, I just didn't care. By far the worst thing I have seen from Hitchcock. Apparently this is regarded as his last classic. Well I have still got four more films to watch but I'm starting to dread what will come next ![]() ![]() |

I watched Torn Curtain only once and I have good memories about it. Although I only remember the kitchen scene, because I think that it was recreated as a kind of parody in Ruthless People, I always want to watch it again.
Also, I have the Hitckcock CD collection that I think was the less expensive version of the reel one, with the black book in the think plastic case with black bottom. Still haven't watch any of those discs and the one that annoys me in its absence is North By Northwest, which I finally ordered as standalone BD last week, giving up finding the digibook edition for a fair price. |
