Looks pretty nice. Thought I was done, but I might continue through to the end of Capaldi’s if they re-release those.

If indeed they are using the newer U.S. discs - do they have the next time trailers restored? That would tempt me to upgrade.

They have no reason to use the US disks for Season 5 on wards. They done 50i disks properly. The David Tennant specials needed replacing since they were 60i. I hope they don't decide to switch to the 24p disks for the steelbook release.

I got mine today as well. They are the US 24p disks. I have emailed a complaint they should of never used the 24p on their disks in the UK.

I don't understand their mentality of 24p on re releases and Doctor Who seems to get this a lot. The only thing the original release could of done with is DTS-HD MA upgrade from DTS-HR.

Wait, for real? Why the hell would they do that when the 50Hz discs are readily available?!

Edit:
Thinking about it, I'm still really unsure why the BBC/2 Entertain keep using different masters anyway. All the different 24Hz, 50iHz and 60iHz constantly are such a waste of resources. I get that the US release has to be something other than 50Hz, but it's ridiculous how they keep shoving the EU with all these terrible/slowed down transfers when they have the native 50Hz transfer since they always have them...

Also the 4k release uses a slowed down transfer, despite the blu-ray that's included is correct. And from what I can find out, the Sherlock 4k blu-ray is in the correct speed, so lord know what they're thinking! It's so strange...

Only Sherlock The Abdominal bride was done in 24p as well in the UK. BBC it seems can never do it right. As been said before we had the 6 disks might see if someone can mod the case to take 6 disks.

What we need is people complaining for them to fix it. Only time they did actually fix a 24p release was Doctor Who 50th anniversary and re issued a new 50i disk.

They used the 24p 'remastered' discs for the Next Time trailers. There were people on Gallifrey Base who wrote to the DVD email line specifically asking for this. Hopefully BBC Studios realises that these 24p masters are both compromises.

Just hope they don't ask for anything on Season 6 or someone get them to ask for it in 50i at least. So because of them we got 24p all for non important next time trailers God dam it.

Aren't those trailers also available in the correct speed, why would they ever ask for the 24Hz versions?

Looking at that artwork again, the portrait of Amy Pond could be more expressive. She's just standing there and looking at us blankly.

The steelbook has 4 discs compared to 6 with the original bluray series set as well, not had a chance to see if anythings missing.

Are there any noticeable differences between the discs in this and the older discs, besides the Next Time trailers being added back in?

The discs in this have DTS-MA audio on the episodes. But obviously it's at the slowed down speed.

Extras are all the same - but are at US standards. So SD Extras are 480p30, and HD Extras (including Confidential) are at 1080p30.

So content-wise, you are probably better off with the original UK set for the best PQ. DTS-HR audio is probably 'good enough' for most people.

The original UK set is also spread out across 6 disks and not 4 disks and I noticed had higher bitrates so they possibly might look slightly better.

I have no idea why but Doctor who is the only BBC show to be a mix bag when it comes to blu-ray releases and odd decisions.

When it came to the 50th Anniversary special when they released it as a 24p cause they just used the 2D encoding from the 3D disk they did a replacement program and replaced the 24p disks with a 50i disk. The Doctor who Tennant specials they never replaced the 60i disks until the steelbook but when it came to planet earth which was released the same time frame that got a 50i replacement which the original was 60i. BBC has been very inconsistence with releases or re-releases and replacements especially when it comes to doctor who.

The original is a VC-1 encode, whereas the new one is AVC. Would that make a difference bitrate wise?

The original 2007 release of Planet Earth was 24p (with a bonus disc as 60i).

The 2010 Special Edition was a new release at 50i. It had a disc replacement due to bad mastering resulting in over exposed picture, not an incorrect framerate.

The DW Specials was released January 2010. Planet Earth SE wasn't until October 2010 - after the four individual DW Series 5 BDs were released at 50i.

So a change of policy early 2010, switching from global to region-specific releases, would explain the discrepancy here.

An interesting one to look at is Torchwood - the first three series, produced at 50i, were released in 2008/9 at 60i. Miracle Day, produced in he US at 60i, was released in the UK at 50i in 2011 (after the switch to region-specific releases).
