"I loved this movie when i saw in 11 years ago. I loved it so much i never watched it again" lol. As a movie fan i just cannot comprehend that approach. If i love a movie, i can't wait to watch it again. |

I enjoy movies and games (even books!) and I often wish that there was some way to rewatch or replay (or reread!) something again for the first time so I can get relive that "first-time" experience. For me, the best way to do that is to not watch or play the same movies or games over and over again. I haven't watched many of my favorite movies in years and I know that I will enjoy them all that much more the next time I see them.

Back then, I loved this movie and didn’t like Avatar (they have numerous similarities). Nowadays, it’s the opposite. Blomkamp has basically ruined his goodwill with each movie after this and looking back, this film had the same problems as his latest ones. Avatar, at least, was more visually interesting and more emotional and James Cameron is still the best action director of all time. It’s not great and it isn’t original but let’s not pretend that District 9 was original when it owes a lot to Alien Nation, which is better than both of them.

Blomkamp is directing a film (well, hopefully, considering Robocop, Alien 3 and others went up in smoke) called Inferno with Taylor Kitsch. Was announced in October 19. He's always said he wanted to do it, so maybe he'll get to it after that one.

'Avatar' was 'Fantasia' 'Avatar' was 'Dances With Wolves' 'Avatar' was 'Pocahontas' See how laziness works? If that's not enough; Quentin Tarantino is derivative because he built his entire filmography around more obscure, foreign and independent cinema. For instance, 'Kill Bill' is basically 'Lady Snowblood'. In the case of Christopher Nolan, 'Inception' is 'Paprika'. For Darren Aronofsky, 'Black Swan' is 'Perfect Blue'. Point is, you're never going to find a modern filmmaker with exclusively original ideas, considering the multi-cultural, multi-medium art consumption that we all collectively do on a worldwide basis. Whether subconsciously or unconsciously, you're going to find inspiration and influence from the works that your brain finds memorable and stimulating, to the point that it archives what works for you and what doesn't. At the end of the day, Neill Blomkamp, regardless of what he's done post-D9, still took a $30-million budget, came out of left field, and made one of the best and most memorable sci-fi action films over the last two decades. And for James Cameron being the so called "greatest action filmmaker of all time", not a single action sequence in 'Avatar' comes close to matching the visceral memorability of the entire exosuit sequence in D9. Avatar couldn't get the steam off District 9's piss. |

Hmmm, I love District 9 and that exosuit scene is cool but I’d say there are more than a few original and iconic action scenes in Avatar. Not a good example.
Though with how most people here talk about Avatar you’d think the Transformers franchise was godly in comparison. I’m totally gonna camp out with some popcorn and wait for the Avatar UHD thread to drop though. ![]() |
