I've seen this movie. It's amazing.

I had the first version with the silver border on the cover. Then sold it.

Then I found the new cover, sealed at FYE for $9.99. Pick it up if you get a chance.

Scored a copy of foil version the other day at my local FYE, I wasn't even looking for it! I was trying to find the copy of TCM I hid.

FYI the title has just been released in several European countries (but not in the UK... yet?).
It features a new AVC encoding, with Dolby True HD 5.1 sound mix (+ several other languages in mono Dolby Digital), on a 50GB disc.

And there is not any bonus, not even a trailer.
OK, the film already uses 45 GB of disc space, with a very decent 23 Mbps average bitrate. This could explain that...

Compared to the screenshots of the US MPEG2 edition, I would say that the image is virtually identical, but you gain the lossless multichannel sound encoding (yet you loose the mono English).

It is not region coded, and in 24p, therefore it will read flawlessly on a US player.

Do you know whether the Russian dialogue will have English subtitles on these European editions?

According to the specification on that linked page, this Australian edition STILL has only lossy audio, i.e. Dolby Digital 5.1. Or is that a documentation error?

Backcover of the disc says 5.1 Dolby trueHD. Tested it and it confirms that. No extras.

Just imported the Aussie release pretty cheap - sadly, it drops the excellent Making Of documentary. Wish I'd known that before I got rid of the DVD.

Terrific film.

Is it safe to assume that the 2006 red band release and the 2008 Paramount HD release are identical except for the artwork?

I think a double-dip might be necessary. A remastered transfer and soundtrack is required for a classic like this.
