The franchise name is Captain Marvel though. It's just odd to omit that from the title, especially when you'd expect Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers to be the main focus.

But they're not omitting the name Captain Marvel from the title. Again, its called the MARVELS. It's literally in the title.

Calling it Captain Marvel: The Marvels would have just sounded weird.

It's the only Marvel movie I hate. And not because of the Larson drama or Marvel girl power complaints or anything else. I just found it a boring, repetitive awful film.

Nah. Marvel Studios aren't afraid of butthurt basement dwellers on the interwebs, particularly when said movie made over a billion dollars. The misogynistic trolls don't come into the equation in the slightest.

Not to sound negative, but this definitely sounds like a demotion for Brie Larson. Even though Civil War was basically an ensemble Avengers team movie, it was still Captain America's movie in lead and in title. There's no doubt in my mind that had Captain Marvel been received better, The Marvels would not be the title of the sequel. Larson may not be getting totally sidelined, but she's obviously sharing screen time and will be less focused on, despite being the main character. It's a shame, because Captain Marvel does have potential to be a great flagship character for Marvel, both in comics and in film, and somehow they never quite pull it off, and now it seems they've abandoned the idea.

I'd very much debate the Captain America-ness of Civil War tbh, they totally undersold his side of not wanting to sign the Accords and manipulated the story to make half the audience think he was wrong, and Tony had equal screentime with Steve and quite frankly, the better development and arc. Personally I don't see CW as a Cap movie, it's more of an Avengers/IM4 mix to me.

That being said it's far too early to be speculating anything like that based off a title and knowing it's going to have two characters who directly show Carol's legacy. They both revolve around her. Not to mention most of the Phase 4 movies are including a ton of characters, Spider-man is due to be stuffed, Doctor Strange has Wanda (and Loki, I think?), etc. It's just the direction the MCU is generally going in, seemingly to be based more on team ups.

Regardless, Captain America was still in the title of the film, while Captain Marvel is obviously getting sidelined in this new film's title.

Again, there's no "Captain Marvel" in the title, so unless they plan to make a Captain Marvel 2 in addition to The Marvels, I think it's safe to speculate that Marvel are moving away, at least temporarily, from pushing her as a solo character that can carry her own franchise. They certainly aren't doing that with Black Panther, when they just as easily could.

Someone posted the comic reference where it's from above but ok. If you think they're doing this because they think Carol can't carry her own franchise because misogynists cried on the internet when the first one made $1.1B then have fun with that. Nothing says not marketable more than over a billion.

It's not that I don't think she can carry her own franchise or even that they don't think it, but I think there is something going on where they've decided to go this route instead, and usually that means they figured they can make more money this way. Maybe it has something to do with Brie Larson. Her scheduling or commitment? Maybe she wants more pay, so they give her less screentime? Who knows? Or maybe they're just holding off on using the Captain Marvel name again until they reboot it with Monica Rambeau as the character.

But they certainly wouldn't remove the name of the main character from any Spider-Man film, even if it was a team-up movie. And as I said, they could have easily removed "Black Panther" from the title with the Wakanda Forever movie, but they may fear losing dollars without the BP name in it. I'm sure the film will make bank eiether way, but with BP in the title, it's guaranteed to make more. Obviously they don't have the same fear of losing money with Captain Marvel, so changing the name might actually help them.

I wish the movie were coming out sooner just so we won't have this back and forth until it literally comes out. Like CM discussion isn't already the worst with the constant *****ing from *ahem* certain quarters.

I don't think the movie's story has anything to do with what I'm trying to say here. Every major Marvel character has carried their own series of solo films with their name in it. This is the first time we're getting a character whose name is not in the title for a movie the character is starring in as the lead. Like I said, unless they are still planning Captain Marvel 2, for them to absorb the character into a team series and abandon her solo films is obviously a new strategy for Marvel and sounds like something that comes down to money. If I were Brie Larson, I'd be pretty upset about it.
