Interesting that they skipped a normal R1 Blu-ray release entirely and went straight to UHD. To my knowledge, this was a big seller back during the VHS and DVD days. I'm guessing they are doing it because it had a 4k remaster done a few years back. (The French release is sourced from it.)

As for the film itself, it's probably one of the better young person sexual awakening/forbidden love romance stories out there. I'm normally not one for that genre, but I do recognize that it was done well here. Don't think I'll pick this up, but glad it's available for people who were frustrated that it never got a standard release in North America.

Rare example of actual penetration slipping by the BBFC (albeit for under a second).

Default The lover blu ray

Looks like it's the rated version. I had hope for a unrated cut.

He's probably basing it on Amazon's specs which states "R" despite also stating a 115 min runtime (the R-rated cut was ~103). Personally, I wouldn't rely on Amazon to provide any reliable specs. I would be surprised if anyone would put out just the R-rated cut on 4K.

I will have a review up this weekend but this looks to be a very solid release, albeit one that is very similar to Pathe's Blu-ray edition from 2015. (The main bonus being, of course, that it's now a true 4K, HDR-enhanced transfer on a triple-layer disc.) Comparing both Blu-rays, there are color and brightness differences but they're obviously sourced from the same master.

I hope this is the type of color difference you're referring too. Capelights UHD compared to Pathes BD:

If the color timing looks more like Pathes then I'll pass.

It is not like Pathe's disc in that it's brighter and has no yellow filter. Although I don't have the German 4K edition to confirm, MPI's release also features German menu options in addition to the dub and subtitles, and my player even identified the 4K disc title as "Der Liebhaber".

I recently updated our listing with all the specs and will have 30 screenshots (including the packaging), albeit sourced from the Blu-ray.

Going by the packaging shots even the mediabook looks very much like the German one. apart for Der Liebhaber title.

Correct, this is the same for their release of The Concubine BD. Same Digibook (or Mediabook) as the German one, just in English. The are essentially the US distributor for Capelight releases.

The Lover 4K Blu-ray Review
This may have been mentioned already, but the Tony Leung in this movie wasn’t in In the Mood for Love. That was Tony Leung Chiu-Wai.

I have the Korean Blu-ray release, which is sourced from a 4K master. I’m guessing it looks similar to the Pathe (and the picture on the back of the slipbox is probably the same one that is on the back of this mediabook).

Except in this case it came out correctly, as it should've from the start. And it's not a new "restoration." It's a fix of the previous botched restoration.

I came in here specifically to post this lol. The two Tony Leungs have always been a point of confusion by name, but they really don't look alike at all.

I own the Korean 4k remastered blu-ray edition from 2019 and when comparing it to the caps-a-holic screens the color timing looks like it's the same version as the German release and not yellowish Pathé one even though Pathé logo appears when I start the movie.

Nevertheless I don't think I'll be upgrading to this 4K UHD edition. I'm already more than pleased with the Korean disc. It is absolutely stunning.

Unless I overlooked it, the above review didn't state if this was in fact the uncut version. I'm assuming that it is.
