Hooray! More Fox titles or were they sitting on this, I wonder?

the previous Blu was utter crap to the point that the DVD was much much better , so it will be hard to make it worse...

I've seen this film 3 times, once on DVD and twice on the Fox BD, so I'm not sure which is more accurate in terms of color timing. However I will say the blu-ray seems more blue than the warmer DVD color timing. For those who saw this in the theater, can you say which is more accurate?

I prefer the warmer/greener color timing of the DVD, but if it's less accurate to the original color, what I prefer is irrelevant.

I posted this in the main Criterion thread, but will mention it here as well.

The laserdisc for this film had liner notes which talked about the Coen's pre-production process for this film. One of the big things they bring up is how specific the Coen's wanted this film to look in terms of color.
To that end, they assembled a book of color swatches that were the equivalent of color storyboards. From scene to scene and act to act, they wanted to play up certain signature colors.

The LD and first DVD shared a similar look.

I was very disappointed when I saw the Bd.

Looking at the caps now, it looks much closer to the DVD/Ld than I remembered- unless that's just the German edition?
I think the biggest alteration was in scenes set in the woods.

I'll be anxious to see what this Criterion is like, as I still haven't been able to sit down and enjoy the current Fox disc. Something about the look has never sat right with me.

Thank you for the info and details. I couldn't imagine the DE and US Fox (considering they have the same distributor) discs being that different, but I've certainly been wrong about that kind of thing before.

I would imagine that the Coen's involvement would definitely help to push the new transfer towards the right color timing.

You would think...but filmmakers change their minds all the time.

Ridley Scott and Dean Cundey have both signed off on multiple revisions of their films. Each is stamped with their approval, until the next wildly divergent looking edition is released with a new stamp of approval.

I'm also bothered by the 2K limitation. This is one of the best films in their oeuvre. If it wasn't accorded a new 4K master in 2020/21, something ain't right.

You forgot to mention William Friedkin and Michael Mann.

I need to go take a look at Miller's Crossing sometime. I know it has a good reputation but I've just watched it. Funny thing is I was reminded that I need to see it from a scene in "Ocean's Twelve" where they mention "Miller's Crossing".

I don't own the previous BD so I'm pretty happy with this announcement. To me, this is their best film from the 90s.

I compared the Criterion screenshot to the Fox Blu and the Criterion is definitely the same master as Fox:
https://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/18989

The Criterion might seem darker but that's more of an issue with Criterion's screenshots (ex: the "Leave Her to Heaven" screenshots on their site have off colors despite the fact it's the exact same as Twilight Time's).

What a waste-of-time release…

That's extremely frustrating. So the only good sign of this release is the fact that Criterion might still have some Fox titles they've been sitting on.

Are the publicity stills on the Criterion website proven to be actual scans of their releases? I honestly don't know, but I'm inclined to think it might not be a definitive representation of their release.
