I have a Linksys WRT54G that was an utter POS with the PS3. I could not connect to media server and be on PSN at the same time. Even when signed out of PSN media server would act funny. My NAT constantly changed, etc UGH.

So.. I bought this new Dlink Wireless N router (forget model) at Best Buy on sale for 50$ and it works PERFECT. I am so happy with it now. Just fyi

Step 1: Enable WMP sharing. Within WMP, Tools menu, click on Options. Within the Library tab, click on Configure Sharing. Put a checkmark in the "Share My Media" checkbox. Click OK. Depending on your network settings you may be prompted with some additional dialogs at this point to "Make Network Private", etc. Basically just choose Yes or OK to anything you're asked at this point (assuming you're on your own home network).

Step 2: Add media. Within WMP, Tools menu, click on Options. Within the Library tab, click on Monitor Folders. Click on the Advanced Options button. Add the folders that contain the media you want to share with the PS3. Subfolders of any folder you add will also be searched for media to share. Once done, click OK. WMP will automatically search those folders and add media to share.

Step 3: Allow the PS3 to connect. Go to your PS3 and turn it on. If it doesn't automatically find the WMP server then tell it to search for Media Servers. Go back to the WMP computer. Again, within WMP, Tools menu, click on Options. Within the Library tab, click on Configure Sharing. Below the "Share my media" checkbox you selected earlier, you see pics of the various devices allowed access to you library. There should now be an "Unknown Device." This is the PS3. Select "Unknown Device" and choose to "Allow" it. Click OK and you should be good to go.

Now when you go back to your PS3, you should be able to see your WMP machine and all the files you chose to share. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I never could get WMP working so a switched to tversity but since it's my work laptop and causes issues when I'm connected at work I ended up uninstalling it. Maybe I'll give WMP one more try with your instructions.

i stream about 40 gigs of content at any given time. tv shows, movies. I use tversity on a wireless connection with a linksys router. I would say it works 80% of the time flawlessly. My laptop which is only 1.67ghz with a gig of ram is transcoding it all.

Basically you need to uninstall all the codec drivers, get k-lite codec full version. install it and then install tvsersity with installing the additional codecs. then add the folder you want to share. the settings in tversity are pretty simple to change. set the video output to 1920 by 1080. just look at everything and read it. it takes an hour to create a large library of files so don't be surprised if no files show up for awhile on the PS3. the forum on tversity is pretty good.

and patience...

No problem. TVersity is great as it supports more formats through transcoding... but I prefer to NOT deal with transcoding. With the latest PS3 updates, the system now natively supports most of the formats I want... and WMP seems to work very well for that, and I don't have to worry about it attempting to transcode video on the fly because it "thinks" the PS3 may have a problem with it.

If you have any trouble, let me know... I've set up a number of systems for people using WMP11 and have worked through most of the more common problems.

That can be quirky. For Win Media Server to recognize PS3 you have to have several upnp related services running. Check in services if any upnp one is not started or disabled. Firewall ports should be open etc.
Theoretically all that is properly set up when you install WMS 11 and start sharing files. However I was unable to make that work when using XP automated install package. Only vanilla install worked for that. No idea why. All services were running and ports were open, still it'd recognize xbox but not ps3 and wouldn't stream anything to xbox anyway.

Oh, and use tversity instead of windows media server. Works better and supports more formats.

All of this brings to mind this point: the PS3 owners manual is terrible for anything beyond basic set-up info and playing a movie/game. It doesn't even adequately explain saving pics from a camera SD on the machine's harddrive.

If they want the many other features of the machine to be seen as positives to non-early adaopter types, they need to explain these other features better.

If I didn't have a 14 year old to help me, I'd be lost.

Not sure what you mean by just sharing a few files. My PS3 can't see any network shares on my network. I set up WMP to add a whole slew of video, picture, and mp3 files off of another network share and set it up to share the library and approved the "Unknown Device" and the Xbox 360. Neither can see any of the videos or mp3's, the xbox 360 can only see the sample pictures, none of the other ones on the share.

Is there a way I can do this using Samba? All these files are hosted on an SMB share on a Fedora 7 machine. I added them to the library on a Windows XP machine and set that up to share them.

Phane are your videos and MP3 stored on the PC you are running WMP11 on? This is are they on the C drive or are they on a removeable hard drive (like a USB Drive or iPod), Network drive or on another computer other then the one you are running WMP 11?

I ask because I had a similar issue but it was WMP issue. I had to make a change to the registure to get it to share any files that was not on the PC.

In that case, can you use another PC to "see" the shared videos, etc? I'm just trying to help isolate the problem. You had mentioned that you were sharing "a ton" of videos, mp3s, etc. I weas just curious, if you removed most all of the library that you were sharing and just shared a couple of folders if the PS3 could then "see" the files. My theory being that either there were certain files in that huge library that were somehow causing problems with the whole shared library on the PS3 and Xbox 360, or that you were attempting to share far too much for WMP11 to handle effectively. I would also try sharing local files only for this test as opposed to the far more complicated network share -> PC -> WMP11 server -> PS3 to see if that works.

You would be better off trying out a DLNA server that runs directly on the Fedora 7 machine. Check out http://www.twonkyvision.de/ for a commercial app, or http://www.gnu.org/software/gmediaserver/, http://ushare.geexbox.org/, and http://mediatomb.cc/ for some free options that run on Linux and should let you share directly to the PS3.

Yea but their support site and forums are excellent, which bring up the point that my manliness prohibits me from barely opening the manual but I'll spend hours on end surfing the internet looking up the minutest of details. Funny how that is.

I did not read you post right the first time. Try this steps on the PC you are running WMP 11 on. Note the making mistake in registry can cause serious issues with your PC:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. In the registry tree (on the left), expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Microsoft, MediaPlayer, and then Preferences.

3. Right-click HME, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

4. Type EnableRemoteContentSharing, and then press ENTER.

5. Right-click EnableRemoteContentSharing, and then click Modify.

6. In the Value data text box, type 1, and then click OK. If you later decide to disable remote content sharing, you can repeat this procedure and change the value to 0.

If this does not work here is a link to some other steps to try:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...q/sharing.mspx

I hope this helps.

Will any of those work with the 360 as well? Not that they aren't both connected to the same TV but I'd just assume have everything working with everything.

I'm guessing that registry key is the answer I was looking for on the WMP route. These files are remote, I have all my mp3s, videos and photos on a linux machine with samba shares that work fine with all my PC's.

If you are using Windows Media Player 11. Add the files you want it to "share". I had to add the files from my third hard drive where I keep all my media files. Also make sure in the XMB when you want to see a Photo, you aren't trying to find it while in the Movie tab etc.

Cool. Let me know if this does indeed help you out with WMP 11. I know it drove me crazy for a while before I finally got it working.

Bah... still no good. No matter what I seem to do it can see the PC but doesn't see any media at all. I'm gonna go with a Linux solution. All the files are shared on a Linux computer anyway so it's cutting out the middle man.

I have tried all of this and still no luck, neither the computer or the ps3 see each other.
