Thumbs up

One of the very best films of the year. Stylish and provocative. The cinematography is sure to be among the year's best. Barry Keoghan is sensational, and Rosamund Pike is a scene stealer. I wish Carey Mulligan had been in it a bit more. Pretty much every line of hers cracked me up, thanks to her pitch-perfect delivery. I loved how demented this was. Emerald Fennell shows us things that will make most uncomfortable and forces us to watch. I relished in the depravity. It was things that you don't usually see in movies. I found it refreshing. I honestly think she could have pushed it a little farther in one or two scenes. Plenty of people will hate this movie. But I can't wait to see it again when it officially opens.

I've been lucky to see the movie three times now - with tonight's screening having an added bonus of a Q&A with Linus Sandgren and Anthony Willis after - and there is one specific scene that's kind of the perfect test for how darkly minded audience members are watching it. I'll leave it as vague as possible but it's a certain extended one shot take of Barry Keoghan in the rain. All three times, I always howl like a madman at the idea that an Oscar winner wrote and filmed THAT.

As for the film itself, it's everything I wanted out of "Promising Young Woman" (not to say that's a bad film, but rewatches haven't kept it up to the pedigree I was sold on, plus Film Twitter became very unbearable about it during awards season at the expense of other films). You can see how Fennell's confidence as a filmmaker has grown from one film to the other, it's a stunning showcase for the crew across the board and Keoghan's performance deserves to be considered a masterclass in acting. Definitely can't wait to see it again.

Loved this! Dark, twisted, funny, and fun. I may go see it again in the theater. Rosamund Pike was excellent in this. I really hope she doesn't get overlooked come Oscar time. So many scenes in this will have people talking.

Shouldn't be. Goes wide theatrical on Thanksgiving.

Unless you mean by November 2024, I'm sure it'll be on Prime by then.

Is this having an international release or is it going the way of "Bottoms" and going directly to Amazon Prime outside of the US?
No distributor has announced it here in Brazil.

If you’re on the fence about going to the theater to see this, I would just rent it. Not a fan of the script. Ending was a little too out there imo. And the aspect ratio drove me nuts!

There's a (minor) theatrical release in the UK, so it is getting shown in some territories.

Loved the use of the tighter aspect ratio coupled with lighting and framing that forces your attention and creates a sense of claustophobia and/or intimacy, masterful stuff.

I keep hearing about the 'bonkers' ending for this but can anyone fathom an ending that ISN'T about the rich getting their just desserts from the filmmaker of Promising Young Woman? That's not a knock, either, I thought PYW at least had some balls to go where it did...

I wanna be proven wrong, or that this film does something interesting beyond making Keoghan the butt of 'ugly duckling' jokes or subject to 'oh, but you're so fascinating inside' word salad so no one expects him when he goes cuckoo. The poor dude seems to fall into two casting umbrellas: the sad sap or the quiet psycho. Perhaps this will be the first time he gets to try his hand at both??

I've loved the campaign, though. I still think My Summer of Love is the polestar for this specific sub-genre, though.

The ending isn't bonkers narratively. you totally see everything coming. i think people are just saying it is shocking because

I liked it, didn’t love it. Essential the Upstairs Downstairs version of Parasite, captures its spectrum of lurid gothic and popping candy satire it’s aiming for even with reckless abandon towards tonal consistency. And elderly couple stormed out the moment Keoghan
[Show spoiler]starts shagging the grave.

I see where you’re coming from but I think they may be talking about the montage at the end and how
[Show spoiler]it explained everything that Oliver did and left nothing up to interpretation. Or maybe it was the fact that Oliver killed three family members and got away with it. I thought it was great until Felix’s death.

Didn’t know what this movie was actually going to be about. It’s weird and disgusting. Horror fans should check it out. Wasn’t really sure about this while watching it, but The end really brought it all together for me.

I overall liked the movie. It kinda started getting eh after

[Show spoiler]Felix's death. I didn't see the need for the other family members to get killed off near the end.

As far as vibes go, this movie had some amazing vibes.
