Exactly my take. Massive fan of the original trilogy (especially first two). Half of me is delighted it made money and is continuing, the other half is very sceptical after the poor reveal of this latest one and the unmemorable cast.
Totally split.

Because there were so many unanswered questions at the end of part 5...

idk, as much as I love having them in the films, I feel like their storylines were finally wrapped up nicely that I'd be fine not seeing them in Scream 6.

A Scream without the Ultimate final girl in this franchise since Day 1 would be a massive gamble for it and just feel wrong. Sidney just needs to be there. There hasnt been a Scream without her or even Gail. But a Scream without Sidney you can’t have.

Good news, just hope they come up with a good meta angle. 2022 had the best meta-commentary since the original imo, so hope they keep it up and 6 doesn't feel aimless.

Admittedly I wasn't a big fan of the latest installment so I'm in the minority but I agree with even the fans that enjoyed Scream 5 who've said things need to get the shakeup when it comes to the cast and writers.
Barrera was a pretty poor lead, I'll agree. Her performance felt very "musical theatre" imo. Reckon she should get offed at the start and Jenna Ortega could be the lead instead. I thought she was much more compelling and her acting was much more believable.

Ortega definitely gave a better performance. I totally bought her fear in that opening sequence and she's got talent BUT I didn't buy her as that character. I didn't buy her as this newbie fan of "elevated Horror" and certainly didn't believe she'd be able to withstand those attacks and be hunky dory soon after. Like I said, I have a lot of problems with the new film but I AM in the minority and I'm aware of that.

I totally agree with this - I think they may be banking on making January “Scream month” where people expect a movie to be released then (like a Halloween movie is generally released in October). They could definitely make January a thing given the success of this one. They’ll want to repeat that success.

Exactly, especially if Neve is willing to come back as she is I don’t know why they wouldn’t include Sidney. That’s typically only something they would do if the actor or actress refused to return (which she may in later sequels). They would be idiots not to use Sidney while Neve is still ready and willing.

Agreed. And I was especially optimistic about the last one mostly because of the directors involved. Very mediocre movie compared to Ready or Not.

I know they won't but really wish they'd move on from legacy characters. 2/3 of them had nothing to do in the new one and it's reached the point of absurdity with how many times it can happen to them.

I'm in.

I mean there's zero left to poke fun at as far as I can see, short of doing a New Nightmare type of movie, killing the cast of Scream off in the ultimate Wes Craven tribute and finishing the franchise on the most meta movie.

...or going to space. I'm not even joking.

However as that most likely won't be the case I have no idea what's left, and with each instalment the odds of it being a terrible entry grow.

But if I can survive Jason Goes to Hell, Freddy's Dead and The Curse of Michael Myers I'm sure I can survive a shit Scream.

Agreed. Jenna has fast become a must-see actor for me. She’s definitely an up and coming scream queen — loved her turn in The Babysitter: Killer Queen and am seriously looking forward to X — who has an actual affection for the genre. I’d be thrilled to see her take over the lead role from Barrera, especially since it would be a nice twist to see the previous film’s protagonist offed in the sequel. She may be a decent actress but this role was not a good fit for her.

Give Neve more screen time and make the killer less obvious please.

Let’s face it, Scream 5 got a boost by coming out at a time when Scream has become nostalgic, and because the marketing focused heavily on Neve and the returning cast. The emphasis was on a showdown between Sidney and Ghostface.

They can’t rely on disingenuous marketing this time, and they can’t keep shoe-horning Sid and Gale into this (as superior as their characters may be) without it seeming absurd. The fact that they’ve turned this slasher series into some generational story is absurd as it is already.

I'm with you all the way on this one. I loved the original trilogy and 4 has grown on me to the point where I prefer it over part 2. This new one though...lots of issues.

In my previous post I stated I'd like to see the remaining cast killed off in the first 10 minutes but that didn't include Sid or Gale (or Mindy, from the new crew). Idk how I feel about Neve and Cox coming back for a part 6. Well if the boring newbies are all dead, I guess the story could go back to Neve as the lead where she and her family are terrorized but then you're really just retreading old territory and throwing in a little Death Wish or something. They're not gonna go down that road.
