I like Guadagnino and I thought Mike Faist was a scene stealer in West Side Story. I like the vibe of the trailer and the kind of movie it’s selling, but I’m just not buying Zendaya in this seductive kind of role, and she still comes off like a kid.

I really hope this one breaks into the mainstream and blows up, kinda like how Baby Driver did for Edgar Wright.
The trailer is certainly very popular on social media, but that doesn't necessarily translate to great box office.

It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August as the opening film. It's not competing.

Luca Guadagnino is pushing for a delay apparently, because of the strikes.

I think that would be a sensible decision, as the movie relies a lot on Zendaya's engagement on social media, and I can totally see it bomb if she can't promote it.

Reportedly the studios don’t plan on coming back to the negotiating table until late October. Then you’ll have the busy holiday movie season. No guarantees a deal gets done this year. So how far would you push the movie back?

I say just hold the date and release it. Zendaya stans know the movie is coming. MGM can still do traditional marketing including online/social media stuff. High school and college aged kids will be back in school mid September, which should be good for word of mouth.

Most will probably see this on digital through MGM+ or Amazon Prime. It’s not getting a French theatrical release, it’s going straight to Prime.

This feels like more of a prestige-indie type film than one that was expected to pull a big profit at the box office.

It's being sold as a rom-com, and it plays (or was supposed to play) at the Venice Film Festival out of competition. So I don't think the studio sees it as an indie title.

Besides, when your movie stars one of the most popular celebrities on social media (we're talking 183 million followers on IG), not being able to use her to promote the movie is a pretty big blow. Remainder that SAG rules prohibit her from even posting about it.

Not sure exactly how MGM could "do traditional marketing", because traditional marketing for a smaller movie like this is basically the star attending premieres and viral tweets about her outfits and things she said in interviews.

As much as I don't want to wait that long, a move to February makes sense.

As a big tennis fan, I'm always happy to see movies made about the sport, but I really wish the filmmakers would use body doubles for the tennis playing scenes. It's pretty obvious that Zendaya is not a professional tennis player.

This and Dune Part 2 were my most anticipated movies for the rest of 2023 and it's looking like neither of them are getting released this year.
