Hopefully they can add the second commentary on here. Regardless, this looks to be quite the stacked released, only missing the second commentary and the 1973 TV film (is anyone really disappointed by its absence though?), but adding in new and archival features that haven't been featured on the previous releases.

3 disc UHD release. Yeah, it's gonna be a digipack. I can't remember the last time CC used a 3 disc scanovo.

It's three discs, so odds are they'll make it a clunky paper box. I hope for a Scanavo though.

THE LOST WEEKEND in 4K would make an excellent companion piece.

Already have the blu but may upgrade. It's impressive to see movies this old look like a million bucks on home video. And it's kind of funny in retrospect that some of the movies from just a decade or so that I saw at the dollar theater from worn 35mm could basically go from a pristine opening weekend print to looking like a rough 16mm grindhouse print by the time it hit the discount theaters.

I am over the moon excited for this! The only one of my top 10 favourite films that I don't own on disc, and I've been hoping for a 4K release but honestly didn't expect it to actually happen for a long while. LOVE the artwork as well (one of the reasons I haven't picked up the standard Blu yet).

Could it be more difficult to license after he passed?

I can't see why it would considering Universal commissioned and own the commentary.

I paid no attention to the amount of disc at first, but I think I remember Billy, How Did You Do It? being a lengthy endeavor. It's stated as a film on the extras. I can't remember exactly how long but I was wondering how they'd cram it onto one disc.

It's either 180 or 258 minutes depending on which version Criterion are including (the three hour one was used on Eureka's "The Lost Weekend"). If it's going to be how Eureka handled it for their "The Lost Weekend" release, will most likely be sourced from a standard definition-Digibeta tape source. Regardless, it will most likely end up on the second disc instead of being on the main feature disc.

Edit: Six part, not six hour.

I only knew about a hour long cutdown version, not an expanded 6 hour cut! The 40 minute documentary on Tokyo Story also has an 80 minute version on the French Blu-ray. And the documentary on Medium Cool also has an extended multipart version on Vimeo.

I agree. I know Criterion has put lengthy extras on single disc releases before (Dreams, Ikiru). My first thought was that this might be too much in this case, even for them.

It's also worth noting that MSRP is $49.95 and $39.95. I guess Criterion has gone to $39.95 for all new Blu-ray releases, regardless of number of discs. (1 or 2).
