I don’t talk about my things to people at work or anywhere really. My mother, wife and son have seen my collection.
Wife- hates it
Son- that’s so cool
Mother- that’s a lot of movies
Here’s the fun part. Wife complains about it on zoom to her family. Now she hasn’t bought me a movie since 2008. (Carnival of Souls on DVD from the Movie Stop in the Jacksonville Town Center near Cheesecake Factory) I buy my movies with my money so nobody can say a thing. But somehow her family feels it’s a waste, I’m a loser, (some of the kinder things I’ve heard) etc etc. I’m not judging her family, but considering in 14 years they have said less than 100 words to me each, I feel they can go play in traffic. How can someone be mad about a safe hobby. Most of her people like to illegally obtain films and whatnot and take it as a sign of pride and sticking it to Hollywood.
My wife will ask ‘where can I see X movie’ I’ll reply ‘I have it’ in many cases then she goes back to watching tiktok and that’s her extent of movies. We haven’t watched a movie in theatres together since Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and probably Foxcatcher on Blu-ray. Listening to tiktok people talk about movies is just how far she goes.
People will find a way to complain about your source of happiness no matter the hobby. In the past I invested lots of money and time into cars. People thought it was stupid. I bought a truck and tinted the windows and put a tool box on it, people still complained. Latest car, changed the badging to black and threw on a red push button starter (38$) people still got bent. I think I just need to be around better people.

My daughters are now grown up, but whenever they come to visit, they enjoy bringing their friends over and showing off my collection is a highlight of the visit. Everyone seems very impressed and we can stand in front of it for almost an hour, looking at different titles, discussing favorite films, etc....

It's always a great topic starter and they always seem to want to pick something to watch. That reaction is really a great joy of mine.

Friends are generally impressed by my collection but also seem confused as to why I buy physical copies of things that are readily available via streaming. Then comes me talking @ them for 20 minutes about the fact that many films and TV series actually aren’t available via streaming, how many streaming services use older/inferior masters, and how dramatically compressed both audio and video are via digital platforms vs the robust presentations provided by blu-ray and 4K UHDs.

At that point, assuming they didn’t walk out mid-spiel, I usually play a title of their choosing. Almost always they will then remark re: that it looks and sounds dramatically better than whatever DVD, torrent (ugh) or Netflix version they last saw on their 32” Vizio back home.

Even so, I can count on one hand the number of people I’ve truly converted over the years. Most will still opt for convenience over quality every time no matter how much “demo” (cringe term I know) material you throw at them.

My wife's mate can't why anybody would want to watch a movie twice! She just sneers at my movie shelf and tells me I'm wasting my money.

She has the same attitude with music. If I'm playing some old music she complains and says I should have the radio on and only be listening to new stuff. What's the point of listening to music you've already heard or watching old stuff you've already seen when there's so much new stuff out there every day?

They came around the other day and my mate browsed through my collection and wanted to borrow the blu-ray of Excalibur but she talked him out of it.

"You've seen it years ago! Why would you want to watch it again?" she sneered.

When he told it was a great film she rolled her eyes and explained "but it's an old movie!"

As if all that "old" stuff that's in your collection wasn't new to you once. Do you just listen to all that crap silently in your own home?

I understand not wanting to create some pointless ruckus with your wife's friend over her opinion but to me her manners are rather disrespectful.

I always point out that not everything is available on streaming services, especially when it comes to old or older movies, b-movies, and horror movies. Not to mention that if something is available to stream you never know when it's going to disappear from whatever streaming service it's on. And in certain cases the version available for streaming will be an altered version. And outside of possibly a trailer streaming services, or digital copies, don't contain any extras. That might be fine for the casual movie fan, but a casual movie fan I am not. Oh, and what are you going to do if your internet goes down? Can't very well stream your movies then, can you?

Your wife's mate sounds like an absolute bore. I could never be with someone who wouldn't want to watch a movie more than once, or thought old movies weren't worth watching. And regarding music: All radio stations do is play the same songs every single day. That's why I stopped listening to the radio over 20 years ago. And again, just because something is old doesn't mean that it's bad or not worth listening to or watching. I'd much rather spend my time listening to old music or watching old movies than restricting myself to current stuff. She sounds so close-minded.

My clingy cat hates anything that takes attention away from her. She doesn’t chew on stuff but she does scream at me if I spend too much time fawning over/re-arranging the film library. She also loves to beg for playtime the moment I sit down to watch anything. Lucky for her she’s a total cutie!

I don't advertise it anymore so really only my GF knows. It's just something I keep in my secret lair for my admiring eyes...my precious. Plus I hate people asking me to borrow movies, without fail in the past it would comeback damaged or not at all.

I got my GF involved in the expensive hobby of photography so she's cool with whatever.

I heard my brother's friends commenting on it once while I was in my room. Guy was impressed. I'm a loner and have only been collecting for about seven years, so I've never shown it to anyone. My brother probably finds it lame. He's fine with much lower quality.

I've only had one movie never come back, but have had a couple come back damaged, so I stopped lending a long time ago. I only made an exception once. When my sister told me that she had never seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off I went straight to my room, grabbed it off the shelf, and pretty much threw it at her. She didn't ask to borrow it, but I just couldn't let her go on any longer not having seen it.

You should try kitten fostering. It'll change your whole life, especially when it comes to home theater systems. My wife and I found out the hard way, kittens LOVE speaker wire. (I'm convinced the inventor of the soundbar was also a kitten foster.)

I used to lend out movies, and they'd take forevvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr to come back, and often scratched to shit in the bargain. Never again. Now I just bring movies over to my dad or brother's place, so I can have total control of the movie in question.
