Not a big fan of either of these, but they are still OG Trek so I will still buy them day one.

I’m still hoping to sell my old set before I get the new discs. It’s a limited edition import thing with lots of extra stuff but nobody on ebay wanted it.

Actually, in a perfect world. Shatner would get to properly make a Director's Cut and present them film as originally intended.

It would be nice if Paramount would allow Shatner to go back with the completed footage and new cgi to do a ‘Director’s Cut”. I don’t know that all of,the footage necessary was shot or not. There’s a decent film buried in there somewhere.

He completed all the filming of the Rockman pursuing Kirk from the shuttle all the way up the rocks until the BOP appears to save him. When the Rockman suit footage was deemed unusable they cut out most of the footage and just added the "Godhead" to a couple of shots. With CGI they could replace the Rockman stunt guy and have the full chase sequence with Kirk climbing the cliff -- which is obviously a callback to him climbing the mountain at the beginning. Except this time it's not "because it's there" -- but to save his life.
The expanded soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith clearly indicates that Kirk being chased was far longer -- as he had scored it using rough cut footage of the scene. When they cut the scene way down Goldsmith shortened the score a lot.
If Shatner could be persuaded to remove the 6-8 minutes of "funny" footage that he was against in the first place and replace it with an equal amount of action or serious dialogue footage and upgrade the FX -- you'd end up with a pretty good movie instead of a weak movie that contains a bunch of great "Big 3" scenes.
It's not going to happen because they clearly would have hyped a new Director's Cut the same way they did for the TMP DE. If they for some reason chose not to hype it would mean they were able to keep even the slightest peep out of the news for many months --not likely.

Even if they did it, the SFX would probably be some terrible looking cheap CGI anyway.

So much this. I'd rather they leave Final Front Ear alone. It's not a masterpiece, it never was and it never will be, but I enjoy it immensely just the way it is.

I'd be interested to see the director's cut of V, just out of curiosity. It's just one of those small mythical what-ifs of 80s cinema. Would it have been saved if Shatner had been allowed to fully finish it? Hell, even in animatic or even storyboard form we might have an idea if the rock monsters would have made the movie better or worse.

I've always enjoyed Final Frontier. Of all the original cast Trek movies, it's the only that just feels like a good, run-of-the-mill Trek adventure. I like the character moments, I also like the comic relief stuff. The finale falls flat on its face but it doesn't ruin the movie for me.

I'm fine with that. They back up just the same and there's always the trusty VUDU codes.

The pre-order for the movies on Blu-ray say...
Blu-ray/digital
The 4K editions say...
4K UHD/Blu-ray/Digital

So at least for now they are indicating that the UHD set includes a Blu-ray and digital copy

I’m always iffy on preorder information. A lot of it could be placeholder info put in quickly or as an assumption on their part.
