They probably spent their advertising budget on the top 20 and left the rest. This is a gamble. Too many idiots in this country.
I mean, it's one of the more left-leaning and LGBT friendly counties in the country. Would be insane to forget that. The city definitely punches above its weight class, so to speak.

Will be watching Smile this weekend and might watch The Good House next week. Kind of surprised it is rated R.

I keep seeing it on YouTube. I've seen it running with a apolitical content but it even runs before conservative content. I don't know if that's trolling or just an algorithm goof-up, either way it seems like wasted ad money.

However, I also have seen no promo material for it at the theaters. The same goes for the Threerelease of Avatar.

Unsure what your theater of choice is in the area, but Bros has had a poster down the left hall at Palace, in Sun Prairie, for months now, and I think the trailer has been attached to every movie I've seen since July. Bros, Don't Worry Darling and The Menu have all been on every single movie I've seen come to think of it.

Wakanda Forever is the trailer I’m getting with everything, but yeah have gotten Bros several times too.

I’m surprised my theatre didn’t get Good House. They usually get Roadside Attraction movies and movies that cater to older people.

We finally got that Lifemark movie weeks after everyone else.

We also got Trick ‘R Treat (2008) which I wanted to see but they put it on one of the smaller screens so it’s not even worth it.

Box Office: ‘Smile’ Laughs to $22M Opening as ‘Bros’ Frowns With $4.8M
'Bros' is the first gay rom-com from a major Hollywood studio and prospered in major cities such as L.A. and N.Y. while getting spurned in much of Middle America and the South.

Really, really sad for Bros. Not only is it a fantastic movie but it was an important test for Hollywood that unfortunately did not pan out. I felt the same disappointment when In the Heights and West Side Story bombed after strong marketing pushes. I still feel so lucky we got this at all though and I will cherish it on Blu-ray. It’s a special film.

In these cases, the studios really need to start trying street teams. Also they should have marketing packages available for people. Grass roots is the only way to save these kinds of movies.

It's truly sad people can't get over their bigotry and support what's both a groundbreaking/genuinely good movie. The LGBT community have been a huge support for the theatrical experience and studios still find it to be a gamble to fund these projects.

Bros needed star power to do well and crossover. Could have done so with someone like Channing Tatum or Chris Evans as the love interest. I hate to say that as I loved Macfarlane in it but it's true. At the very least the supporting cast should have had some names that they could show off in the ads.

I agree mind of agree but at the same time casting a famous straight make actor in the lead would have defeated the purpose of the movie. And unfortunately there are no gay actors who have the same star power as Channing Tatum and Chris Evans. Regardless, I still feel so lucky to get a movie that was as good as this was and Luke Macfarlane was perfect. I hope this makes him a star.

This is just a terrible and immature take.

This film was not marketed as funny or having a good story. It was marketed as a historic gay rom com. This has nothing to do with bigotry. You swap out a Bro with a Hoe and if it is marketed the same way this film was (no emphasis on comedy), no straight dude is going to go out of their way to see that at a theater (let alone likely even stream it).

There is such a disconnect right now between Hollywood and the mainstream going public. Content >>> our Time. The theater experience is more costly and less of an experience. It’s also a crappy time I think for a movie like this to come out. And lastly I think people more than ever just want an escape (which is getting harder and harder to get in a world of reboots and spoilers).

To completely ignore all of these (and more) contributing factors to why the film performed the way it did to pure ignorance of most of America / The West (I guess?) is simply showing nothing but ignorance on your part.

It honestly baffles me how you can make a post like that and knowing you have been a member here since 2011. Wow.

Are you joking? 4.8 million opening does not scream "gay community support" at all. Roughly 20 million + lgbtq people in the U.S.... if half of them went to see it over the weekend it woulda made 120+ million based on $10 to $12 dollar ticket prices. Even a quarter of that population woulda given the film a decent weekend...

To blame it on "phobes" is a disingenuous cop out and a spineless scapegoat, not to mention utterly hypocritical. Also, nobody is obligated to support any film regardless of what it's about. Crazy Rich Asians, a hit despite there being racists out there, same with Woman King which has gender and race and historical controversy, and of course Black Panther... The Bird Cage, a 1996 movie slathered in queer and drag, in a time when being a phobe was whatever still 124 million box office. Save the excuses and outrage.

NOBODY went to see it, not just "homophobes". What is truly sad is how quickly the brave and stunning lose that vigor in the face of honest defeat. So much as to make BS excuses that can't even be proven or quantified.

This is the start of the story,

Bros‘ top 10 markets were all in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, while it is underperforming in much of the middle of the country and the south.

I think there is more to tell. It will be interesting to see how it does on home viewing.

Spot on.

Queer people can go to see straight people's rom-com's till the cows come home but the reverse is not true.

The LGBTQ community as a whole (outside of NYC and Cali) never came out either. And if the movie is that good, then word of mouth should cause an uptick this coming weekend, no?

What are the arguments besides these emotion fueled posts?
