As for the Kino audio, it sounded fine to me once I turned the volume up.

Unless a viewer requires English subtitles (and I appreciate that some do) the KL is a huge improvement over the Eureka for many consumers.
Agree on the Lost Weekend. I am keeping Eureka's mainly for the 3 hour Wilder documentary..but PQ is no comparison with the 4k Kino.

The KL disc uses a new 4K master from the original negative. Eureka claimed theirs would use the same master in all their pre-release promotions, but at the last minute, they removed that wording, and they used the ancient DVD-era HD master when they released their disc just weeks before Kino's. People wondered how they could have gained access to Kino's new master for a release that would pre-date it, and they were right to wonder, in the end.
Agree. I actually ended up selling my Eureka FGTC to get Kino's. One of the few times that Kino's BD was superior to an Eureka, imho

The 3-hr Wilder doc is also on the new Criterion UHD and BD of Double Indemnity.

Yep, I have no idea why Eureka was promoting that they would have the new 4K scan of FGTC right up until the disc came out. Must be a story there.

Glad I learned they were not going to have access to it and waited a month more for the KL disc.

But if you want the absolute best transfer/release, then to me there is no comparison.

I love Kino, but not for their treatment of silent films. Sometimes they are the only ones release some silents, but when I have a choice I always pick Eureka.

Also, I prefer Eureka's version of Lang's sounds film, too.

Just my perspective.
I'm looking at comparisons online now, and the compression on the Eureka discs does look a lot better. I see film grain instead of the blocky pixels on the KL discs. I may need to pick up both.

Can you remind me, there was some issue with KL's standalone discs of Woman in the Moon and Spies, I think. DVD Beaver says the KL versions of both were 1.28:1, while the Eureka discs were 1.33:1.

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-r...on_blu-ray.htm

Was this the issue? I believe it only applied to the KL standalones and was corrected for the KL boxset, right? Sorry if I'm getting the story a bit wrong.

True. And if I get that, then i will sell my Eureka. But I am really limiting my upgrading from BD to 4K - even for classic. Double dipping from one BD to another BD is done extremely rarely for me.

The UHD of Double Indemnity is a MASSIVE upgrade. All previous video incarnations were seriously overbrightened for conventional televisions. The new transfer is a revelation, the shadows finally look inky black, not charcoal gray with swarms of pixels.

I wish Twilight Time or Kino Lorber had done Guerrilla while the Fox catalog was available, there's an HD transfer on Amazon. Sadly, it's locked in the Disney vault now.

this cast is superb, Ill be getting this just for that.

Lang is a bit hit and miss for me, his silent era is incredible, then his hollywood era has some excellent movies (I hope this is one of them), but his latter era with german movies in india and the likes, Im not a fan at all. Even some of his hollywood movies I think are highly overrated and havent aged the best (man hunt, secret beyond the door, human desire, cloak and dagger, but I love the big heat, rancho notorious and moonfleet)

Watched this last night and I wasn't a huge fan. Didnt feel the chemistry between stanwyck and Ryan (who I usually love), didn't like the ending at all, didn't like Odets dialogues (also a bit hit and miss for me, sometimes they're good, other times not so much). The film appears to be daring but at the last minute loses all its guts. I did like paul douglas performance and the guy who plays his uncle, also the beginning is really good.

the film looks amazing, I mean what a transfer this is! and the extras have an AC with Lang and Bogdanovich!

Just watched my Blu-ray. Beautiful transfer as always from Warner Archive. Barbara Stanwyck is amazing as always. Paul Douglas was great too.
I read where RKO wanted to borrow Joan Crawford from Warner for the Stanwyck role but she declined.

Thanks for your thoughts! On the fence here, but I'll probably pick this up soon

This is listed as region A but WAC releases are usually region free, right? Can anyone confirm if this is region locked. Thanks.
