It's notable that Band Together is available on Vudu whereas The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots The Last Wish are not. Wonder if that's a sign of Dreamworks Animation returning to Vudu, or if Band Together was included in the Vudu contract with the last Trolls movie, World Tour.

Thanks, I have updated the thread title. Hopefully it can be updated again as it would be a shame if this got no 3D Blu-ray release, as with the first film.

A VUDU release is completely inaccessible to me though sadly, I still haven't seen the Super Mario Bros movie either.

I missed seeing the vudu page this time but that's good news. If this doesn't get a 3D release I might just buy that. Sucks you can't rent the 3D version.

If I were to take a guess it probably just like with Mario.either has to do with either universal thinking they could make more profit of a contract release with leiapad the 3d tablet that is glasses free and had rentals of universal movies exclusively from 2021-2022 through their movie store leiaflex.or universal was thinking they could make more money of a 3d Blu-ray release. In either case the contract with leia probably ended early this year.and also remember vudu is owned by universal studios by 75 percent due to them owning 75 percent of fandango.which you guessed it owns vudu so it costs universal studios almost nothing to upload it their unlike iTunes Amazon and other digital movie resellers.

It will most likely be rentable on either the day trolls band together drops to 19.99 for purchasing and 5.99 for rental or when the movie hits regular Blu-ray or 2 weeks after it hits Blu-ray

So, Vudu is now owned by Comcast, who own Dreamworks.

Maybe all future 3D release movies made by Comcast will end up on VUDU only?

Actually I'm pretty sure it won't be rentable because it's only available as part of a bundle with the 2D version. Bundles are never rentable. Notice you can't purchase the 3D version separate from the 2D version. For Mario you could.

The difference you probably didnt realize because you probably havent been tracking what films get released on 3d on vudu as long as i have is the following. You see the 3D version of mario only became avaliable to purchase once the 2d version of mario was already purchasable for the regular purchase fee of 19.99 instead of the premium price of 29.99. i know this info because i have kept checking every dreamworks and illumnation to arrive out on digital since 2021.The reason why i have done this in hopes they would all be all available eventually on vudu in 3d.I have kept regular checks on this since 2021 when the first dreamworks film to arrive on 3d digitial (under comcast ownership of dreamworks since 2019) the boss baby family business became the first dreamworks title to be avaliable on vudu in 3d. Before the films were released on vudu in 3d by comcast the films were released on fandango now since comcast only became the owner of vudu sometime before the the boss baby family business came out in theatres. A little known fact is that the 3d versions of trolls 1 and trolls world tour and captain underpants the first epic movie had their 3d versions avaliable on fandango now from 2019-2021 which when fandangonow merged into vudu the people who owned those movies in 3d digitally from buying it on their oculus quest on fandango now got the 3d versions of those movies merged into their own vudu account.

Now if you want know why films from Sing 2 to Puss In Boots The Last Wish didnt arrive at all on vudu in 3d thats probably because Comcast signed an exclusive contract to sell their 3d films on leia flex digital movie store which was only was avaliable to be used on the leia lume pad 2 which for those unaware is a small 9 to 11 inch glasses free 3d tablet.I do not know the exact details but it is very coincidental that from 2021-2022 the only way to watch digital 3d films of films made by Comcast was through the leia flex digital store.Also theres the fact that random space media had the blu-ray 3d rights for Comcast films however sadly Random Space Media closed september of last year.

The rights are now with a German label called Turbine, they will release 3 titles (that were already released by RSM) in the upcoming months and more to come later this year.

Sooo, I’ve never purchased a 3d movie from vudu. Am I doing something wrong? The screen is split in two, I have a Samsung capable 3d television.

The digital 3D version of this movie is available for $20 on Vudu. It is a digital purchase — not a rental. So you will “own” the digital version of the movie indefinitely and can watch it as many times as you want. No, you don’t get a disc.

So, one gets to download and keep an electronic file of the movie, such as an ISO? If so, I can certainly work with that, unless the file includes some sort of nanny code that prevents playback without a connection to vudu, or whatever. Does it?

Not that I am champing at the bit to own this particular move, retirement budget being what it is, but am curious about vudu and will try to research their offerings further.

The link is to the 2D/3D bundle which is available for purchase. You cannot purchase the 3D by itself. You can stream the 3D though the VUDU app and/or you can save it to a tablet or phone to watch offline, but you cannot save it to a personal computer like you can with iTunes. I had to inquire about this when I purchased the Super Mario Bros 2D/3D bundle.

Thanks for the info! So, if I could save it to a tablet or phone for offline viewing, how is that different from saving it to a PC? If I prefer to watch on my PC, could I not copy the file from either a phone or tablet and then watch it there? I must be failing to grasp something.

Have you ever used a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, etc.? This is very similar, except you are not paying a subscription fee -- you are paying a one-time fee to "own" a digital version of a movie.

There's nothing to download. Once you purchase the digital movie, you stream it through the Vudu app, which is available on most 3D TVs with "smart" capabilities, Apple TV boxes, several Blu-ray players, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, etc. On Vudu, 3D movies are in a side-by-side format, so you might need to manually turn on your TV/projector's 3D mode once the movie starts playing. You can stream 2D movies on the Vudu website, but you can't watch 3D movies from the website (you will get an error that says, "Cannot play this movie on this device").

On the Vudu app for iPhone and iPad (and I assume for Android phones & tablets), you can download the movie to the app for offline viewing. But you can only watch the movie through the Vudu app - you don't get access to the file and you can't transfer it to your computer. I don't think this feature is very useful for Vudu's 3D movies, since you won't be able to watch them in 3D on any phone or tablet that I know of.

Hmm. Sounds like I would "buy" the movie, but could never actually take sole possession of it. To me, that is not owning anything; it is merely the ability to watch repeatedly without incurring additional charges, for as long as the vendor decides to keep their site going, which could change at any time, and I would no longer have what I "own". Perhaps I am being too harsh in my analysis? Apologies if my innate cynicism is coloring my thoughts.

I mean, you pretty much just summed up "ownership" of digital movies. No, you don't get anything to physically hold, touch, or own. You are pretty much just purchasing a perpetual right to access the digital version of the movie. I'm surprised you're just now learning about digital movie ownership. Digital movie storefronts like iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, etc. have been operating for years, and I don't know of any significant instances of those companies having removed or deleted movies over the years. Not to say it hasn't happened, but it seems like a non-issue, especially for movies from major studios like Universal, Warner Bros., etc.

If it's any consolation, Vudu is owned by Comcast. Comcast owns Universal. Universal is the distributor of Trolls: Band Together. The chances of this movie being deleted from Vudu, or of Comcast shutting down Vudu, are very low.

I own more than 1,200 digital movies across iTunes and Vudu and I've never had any problems in the 12+ years I've been collecting/purchasing them. Considering Vudu is the only way to own/watch this movie in 3D at home, I'm happy to spend the $20 to add it to my digital collection.
