I have the Indicator Blu-ray and think it's a nice transfer. One of Schrader's best. A serious drama, but with moments of humour in its grim tale.
George C. Scott is so intense in this film that's it's slightly unnerving. |

Got my copy today from Best Buy with slipcover.
I can't help but think this video has been zoomed in. Very crisp video / audio otherwise. Two commentary tracks, original trailer and other trailers like one for Blue Collar. What am I missing not having the other version mentioned throughout this forum. Trigger Warning: Lots of triggers to abuse victims. Very dark movie. Based on a true story. .Main actress was in her 20s when filmed and only made this film. |

Ilah Davis, who plays George C. Scott's abducted daughter, had been a worker in the sex trade. She wasn't supposed to interact with Scott very much on film. However, the studio decided that they wanted a "happier" ending, so her lengthy climactic scene with Scott was added. She had no training as an actress, which must have disappointed Scott.
Ilah Davis lived in cult groups, such as the Yippies and the Rainbow Family, for much of her life. She died several years ago. Last edited by Jobla; 08-23-2023 at 03:57 AM. |

When Ilah Davis passed away, somebody posted many photos of her online. There were photos of her preparing "supplies" for Rainbow Family gatherings. There were also a couple of shots of her from HARDCORE, as though appearing in it had been a highlight of her life. In August of 1978, she got a four-page spread in Cheri magazine, in a piece entitled something like "That 'Hardcore' Girl." Full nudity, and she looked much happier and more comfortable in the magazine spread than she did in the film. It appears that around 35 photos of her are still viewable online, at a site called flickr. I went to flickr, and entered Ilah Davis in the search box, and up popped some of the photos that I saw years ago. The photos show her at different times during her life, including some Rainbow Family stuff. Last edited by Jobla; 08-23-2023 at 04:34 AM. |

Scott wasn't disappointed, he was a raging alcoholic who would leave the set to go to his local dives to get shit faced. The actress that played his daughter was not an actress at all and Paul Schafer regretted that final scene of her being pissed off at Scott, because it falls flat for him due to her inexperience. Eh, I think it's fine. The movie is great overall. |

I got my Kino copy today (bought purely for the Schrader audio commentary) and the video quality, as expected, is definitely not better than Indicator’s, which was encoded by David Mackenzie / Fidelity in Motion. Indicator’s looks like a 4K UHD on BD (similar to Body Double) and the Kino like a very good BD, so a little worse on first glance with no troubling anomalies.

What was good for the gander was also good for the goose:
George C. Scott's actress wife Trish Van Devere starred in HOLLYWOOD VICE SQUAD (1986). She played a mother who goes to Los Angeles in search of her runaway daughter who may have become involved in the Hollywood sex trade. I wonder if HARDCORE and HOLLYWOOD VICE SQUAD would make a good double-bill? |

For those who own the Indicator release and may be concerned about missing out on the Paul Schrader commentary, you can listen to it here:

That link to the audio commentary seals it for me. I’ll just keep my Indicator copy, and play the Schrader commentary on my phone through my Denon Home speakers as I watch the film.
I have yet to watch this, but I’m in the mood for Hardcore having just watched The Last Run as part of the Criterion Channel’s “‘70s Car Movies” collection. |
