I'll get this one and I'd also like for classic 50's-60's SiFi:

Attack of the 50' Woman
Last Woman on Earth
One Million Years BC

(like I say, "sometimes cheese is good")

I'll be standing in line the night before at BB for Forbidden Planet.

It will be interesting to see if they stay with the original theatrical aspect ratio on this title. I beleive Forbidden Planet was one of the few movies of the 1950s where they used the three cameras projecting on three screens. (Long and very narrow profile when viewed on a TV.)

This title will be in my top 10 most anticipated release of 2008.

IF soNY is so dissapointed in "classics" like Close Encounters not selling so well , its just desserts for not releasing a classic that would sell in the tens of thousands world wide- namely lawrence Of Arabia

To me, it was the 50's equivalent of Star Wars. I've had it in LaserDisc and DVD. Certainly, I will buy it in Blu.

Nope, cinerama (3-camera/projector) widescreen process was used for only one actual "dramatic" feature-film: How The West Was Won. The rest of the material that was filmed in cinerama were things like documentaries... similar to IMAX films of today.

Forbidden planet was shot widescreen, but with a single camera.

Default About Forbidden Planet's Aspect Ratio Part 2

Dear Marcusarilius (Isn't that Marcus Aurilius?);

(Part 1 is my first post and as I write this has not shown up yet.)

Fred Wilcox, the director was not enamored of CinemaScope™ or Cinemascope 55™ and FP was filmed using the latter system with a single camera by George Folsey who spent much of his career filming B pics and serials. There was very little camera movement used as M-G-M studio s was just beginning to use widescreen and they, like all the others didn't quite know what to make of it.

For more information on aspect ratios go to

http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/

an excellent site on not only the different types of widescreen formats but sound, color and many other aspects of movie making as well.

BTW, It;s nice to chat with someone who is relatively close to me(about 50 miles). I am a shut-in due to physical injuries and rarely get out anymore. Two of my degrees (PhD & DSc) are in nuclear physics. Hope you enjoy it!

Sincerely,

Wasn't this released on HD-DVD earlier? Did anybody happen to get it? And do you think it'll be the same transfer?

Can't compare to the HD-DVD because I never saw it. But dvdbeaver now has BD screencaps up. Looks good to me (film grain is alive and well).

Thanks! Those images do look great, I can't wait to watch this. Somehow I've never seen it before, but I recently found out its based on Shakespeare's The Tempest which is a favorite of mine, so I'm kinda freaking out. Plus, it's referenced in Rocky Horror Picture Show

Default "..a simple blaster".

I was torn up over FP being HD exclusive. That alone (well, almost) made me ride the fence for months. Finally pulled the trigger on a PS3 last Fall. Fortune smiled upon that decision. I bought the SD of FP. Now I'm ready for the BD! With each new evolved format I end up awaiting the "golden age of sci-fi" to be released again. That's what originally got me lured into laserdisc. Those glorious box sets...

Without a doubt. Forbidden Planet is one of my all-time favorite films (very easily top-10). I don't care if it benefits from being on BD or not, Forbidden Planet will be an immediate purchase for me.

BTW folks, when you get this blu-ray, if you feel that the image is sometimes soft or a tad murky in some scenes, it's the source print: not the transfer/mastering. The 35mm print of this film was gorgeous, but the (impressive) optical effects do sometimes lend a softness to the image that's part of the film itself.

Looking at the screen-shots (from DVD Beaver... sadly WB won't let blu.com use actual screen shots in their review which is why the images in blu's review look like total crap) this BD should be preserving every drop of resolution I saw projected via 35mm.
