Can't compare to the HD-DVD because I never saw it. But dvdbeaver now has BD screencaps up. Looks good to me (film grain is alive and well).

Thanks! Those images do look great, I can't wait to watch this. Somehow I've never seen it before, but I recently found out its based on Shakespeare's The Tempest which is a favorite of mine, so I'm kinda freaking out. Plus, it's referenced in Rocky Horror Picture Show

Maybe Sony and other studios should offer more trade in programs to get some of the millions of copies of DVD's off the streets. Many people won't bother upgrading there DVD's on movies that aren't their favorites. DVD copies are currently worthless on the used market and users are more likely to give away the DVD to a friend. In which case the person its given to is less likely to buy the bluray. I think its in the studios interest to offer upgrade paths like Warner did. In the case of Warner I upgraded titles I would have never bought the Blurays for if there hadn't been a offer.

I have the SE close encounters on DVD and I like the movie, but not enough to buy the Bluray. Now if Sony offered some sort of trade in deal I'd think about it.

I'm all over Forbidden Planet though.

WOW. Impressive! How old are you? I'm 39, but regarless of age I imagine many folks might not have had the projection ability to legitimize procuring 35mm prints for their personal collections... but I have *seen* this film projected via 35mm at a sci-fi film festival so I at least have that feather in my cap.

My more limited list of Forbidden Formats I've collected:

* Every DVD release
* Criterion CAV LD set
* VHS

And I thought I used to be a Forbidden-Planet fanboy, but the bar has now been raised!

Oh, I also have the CD soundtrack and LP soundtrack album.

Since there's no discernible difference in the HD DVD after looking at the BD screen caps I will stick with it until my three players die.

Dear Mr. "DaViD Boulet";

Actually I'm not exactly a "fanboy". I'm in my 60's.

Next to Bill Malone (whom I am friends with) I own the largest collection of material from FP: 3 costumes, 80 props, 16 set pieces, and over 2,000 pictures.

If you go to Photobucket and look-up the account "krellday" and go to the album "Forbidden Planet" you can see 900 of the pictures that I have from FP and related TV & movies. One of these was taken in early 1955 and shows Walt Pidgeon and me on the Krell lab set. My family has been in show business for several generations and I grew-up around many of the old stars and on the sets.

Sincerely,

Robert Ear; "Butch" Day

this evening I plan to peruse your collection photos with child-like glee... FP competes with Blade Runner as being my favorite sci-fi film. FP is my dad's all-time favorite sci-fi film and I remember seeing it as a kid on television and being awe-struck by the concept and excecution (ever since then it's been in my film library on the given consumer format of the day). A grade-A gem from the era of classic sci-fi and on that probably set the reference point until 2001 A Space Odessy. To have this on blu will be one step closer to my goal of having all classic sci-fi titles in 1080p (would love when worlds collide and the classic War of The Worlds on blu as well).

Default FP on the Big Screen

One of the pictures is a B&W photo of the screen of Graumann's Egyptian in Los Angeles with some usherettes in front of it. Notice the size. It's HUGE! This is where FP was shown in it's initial run on Wednesday March 15, 1956.

Why this date? Back then most school systems took a Spring break (usually but not always close to Easter) and this is when school Spring break happened in 1956.

At the same film festival where I saw (a perfect) 35mm projected print of FP, We also saw (a perfect) 35mm projection of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Words cannot describe how profound and unsettling this film's impact was when viewed in a theater on the big screen. I've always loved this film and have always felt impressed by it... but seeing it projected theatrically caused it to take on an even more serious, more relevent impact. I can only imagine how its contemporary audience viewers would have felt watching it for the first time.

Same goes for many of the sci-fi films we saw projection in the theater. THEM was another great example... very serious, and with quite a bit of fright-factor on the big screen and the whole thing just took on a more serious, more real tone on the big screen. I think that psychologically our brains have gotten too used to "writing off TV" and so many films we have only seen on television haven't really had their chance to speak to us properly (one of the reasons I got into home projection). It was also clear watching THEM on the big screen where Cameron got his inspiration for a female heroine with a flame-thrower in a queen-lair's egg chamber for Aliens... for some reason I hadn't noticed that connection before and neither had all my sci-fi friends.

8 or 9 years ago at a theater in Tustin, CA., they showed a beautiful newly struck 35 mm print, for that showing, of Forbidden Planet!

What was unique was, about 2-3 feet on either side of the film was overlapping onto the side curtains.

George Wallace (Bosun) was there for a Q&A before the movie. Also in attendance was a full scale model of Robbie...the $75,000 one!!!

They took Robbie into the lobby and I had my picture taken with it and my son...7th heaven...since it's my favorite movie.

My first movie I owned of it was a $75 pan & scan VHS tape, yikes!

I collect movie posters and I've always wanted FP, but I just couldn't seem to come up with the $15,000-20,000 for it...plus the wife factor. I was tempted at one time to purchase one, because I almost took that cockeyed advice of my son, "Buy it, she can only kill you once!"

I forgot to mention that before I went to Viet nam in 1969, I visited Forrest Ackerman's home on Olympic in L.A. While going through his art collection, there was a original pencil drawing of the "Monster from the Id" by Joshua Meador. He told me to pull it and look at it. So, I got to touch an original drawing from the movie. What's sad is, I wonder who has it now?

I will get this together with THX-1138!

The review on this site is up, and it sounds very promising!

PQ is of supreme importance to me, that's why I am not getting Mars Attacks. It's not one of my favorites, not even close, so I'd only have bought it if the PQ had delivered the goods.

I don't think I have ever seen Forbidden Planet, but I love Science Fiction, especially clever one, and the "Watch the skies" documentary alone is worth the purchase IMO.

I have the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still", so this is a no-brainer.

Agreed, I was fortunate enough to have seen a beautifully restored print of FP at the Bytowne Cinema (in Ottawa) in December '89. And I have not forgotten a single moment of that experience...

It is wonderful to read Mr. Robert Day's posts, as well as usfo, as this classic film has a special place in the hearts and imaginations of so many people - whether they were a member of the film industry community or the larger audience.

I'm in my 50s and in the process of "semi retiring" - my last day of work was yesterday and I'm moving back to my hometown shortly. The first BD that will be played on my theatre setup when I am resettled will be Forbidden Planet.

On a final note, thank you Martin Liebman for your review, and a special thank you to Warner for respecting this film's importance and giving it the best treatment possible for it's BD release.
