A low budget movie used "AI" for a couple splash screens and people are really losing their minds over this? Would people have been happier if they paid someone 5 bucks on Fiver to create it for them? No one was put out of a job for this.

It's a shame because I was really looking forward to this one and I don't feel good about not supporting a promising indie horror film, but it is what it is. I don't want this garbage in my movies.
Just a heads up, James Cameron used AI in the production of Avatar 2. Also, all 3 of the new 4K Cameron releases used AI, you have them on your wishlist, so just giving you a heads up, might want to remove them.

I've heard it's great, going to see it tomorrow night with an intro by David Dastmalchian.

Agreed on all.

I mean, if AI can be a tool, then a small indie production is perfect for that application (especially if it isn't even full scenes).

I know you think this is a get but I'm very aware. AI was also used during the filmmaking process of Across the Spiderverse, Dune Part 2, Avatar 2, etc, etc. The difference there is that in those instances, it was used as a tool to help a human artist, each time. As for the 4K blu-rays, I don't love it but those are films that came out years ago that Cameron has gone back to and used AI in his new transfer process. Again, very much a different thing.

You'll notice too that those films aren't splashing sloppy AI generated images on the screen, which this film is. It's lazy and dumb looking, without any purpose or artistry behind it.

I'm not using it as a "get". You're selectively choosing what AI is good and what is bad. With Dune, Avatar, etc, while AI is being used as a tool, that is still replacing man hours with a computer. Those movies also have budgets 100x (and up) higher than Late Night with the Devil.

So LNwtD saving a few bucks to create a silly splash screen, vs Big Budget Hollywood films using it to cut hours of work from workers is somehow ok?

The future is here, and if you're not going to support an indie film made for peanuts because of a single image, you're probably not going to be watching many movies going forward.

I'm not selectively choosing, there's ways to use this technology which doesn't delete entire jobs and the films I listed above do just that. Beyond that too, there's purpose and motive behind Dune using AI to help color the freman's eyes or Spiderverse using it to render animation. It's not just a sloppy AI generated image thrown on screen that could have been made in a day or two by an actual artist, like Late Night is doing. The difference is night and day. I'm not sure why this is hard to understand. It looks bad and lazy. I'm not sure why people are ok with it just on that basis alone.

No job was lost because they made a static image. And once again, the Freman's eyes could have have been colored by someone in the special effects department....guess they didn't want to pay them for that?

Unless you can prove the point that someone lost a job, your only argument is "It looks bad". Which...it's a tongue in cheek no-budget horror movie...

I watched a screener of this last week and REALLY enjoyed it. I liked the 70's aesthetic, which helped this seem more grounded somehow. Most films with a demonic / possession angle released nowadays tend to go off the rails with cheap scares to make up for lack of style or substance.

David Dastmalchian really shines in the lead role and I hope he finally receives his just due because he's so underrated as an actor.

Got my tickets to see this on Tuesday, and am beyond pumped! I understand concerns over AI (and easily agree with most), but a few pics that last for a few seconds on screen isn't in any way a big deal. So, I will be going and getting to experience this.

This may be David Dastmalchian's entry to the next level in Hollywood, leading man status. He's quite the chameleon as a character actor and I'm glad people are noticing his talents.

He oozes realism as a 70s talk show host in Late Night With The Devil. The novelty is irresistible, and adds another layer of charm to the story. Let's face it, we love retro-feel movies. But it doesn't get in the way of the story, which has some nice shock value and constant creep factor.

This might be the movie people keep talking about throughout the year, and a clue that horror is alive in 2024 after a rough start.

4.5/5

I'm super excited to see it tonight. Dastmalchnian recorded a pre-show introduction for our theater (or at least told that's what's happening) and I've been hearing only good things about the film from those who have seen it,

People complaining about AI aren't remotely ready for what's coming. This is just the first droplet.

Yep. It's already being used, but people are losing their minds over this particular one, and it's baffling.

No one bats an eye when Dune, Avatar, James Cameron and other billionaires use AI to "assist" (aka, cut man hours/positions) yet a low budget indie film uses AI to create 3 images (while still having a fully paid art department) and everyone calls for a boycott. It's absurd.

People complain everything is a sequel or a bland blockbuster, then this comes along, and those same people actively participate in it's downfall.

Bravo.

Precisely.

AI will either completely change the industry or kill it off entirely. The strikes just delayed the inevitable. No point griping about it.

Again, I know you think you have a point and a win, but you don't. There is a massive difference between generative AI and machine learning AI. Most big budget films use machine learning AI of some sort, and have for many years, to produce things like dynamic water and sand, etc. Nobody's hours were cut to render water in Avatar or sand in Dune. The big issue with Late Night is that it's generative AI images that easily could have been created by an actual artist. Machine learning AI doesn't take away entire jobs from people, it makes pre-existing ones easier for the people do them, it's a tool.

I know you're trying to protect the integrity of this film, which IS a film I want to succeed, but the creators messed up and that's ok to admit.
