I won't fully commit to this, but I'll inevitably watch some horror films, so I might as well join in.
Yesterday I watched The Face of Another ![]() IMDb says Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi. I don't know, I would say it's primarily an avant-garde drama, and it's pretty light on the horror elements. I did enjoy it quite a bit, but more for its cinematography and its weirdness than any of its other qualities (well, most of the girls were easy on the eyes, too). Today I listened to the Tony Rayns commentary, and it only solidified the fact that while I appreciate the guy greatly for his knowledge and his first hand experience with some of my favourite directors, I often don't agree with his opinions or his readings of subtext. 7/10 Next: The Lair of the White Worm... |

1. Evil dead rise - i did not enjoy this at all, which surprised me. I found it quite tedious and without the humour of the first 3 or the nastiness of the remake.
2. Zombie holocaust - a classic of terrible zombie films but probably my least favourite of the italian zombie flicks from this era (that i have seen) but some hilarious parts none the less. |

2. V/H/S 2-WAY better than the first film. Some shorts were better than others but none of them I would call bad. Also features the best short of the franchise so far (Safe Haven). 8/10.
3. Zombie Holocaust-Some great special effects, and some not so great (the dummys ARM came of for f*** sake). Not the best zombie/cannibal movie I've seen but certainly not the worst. And what's with Colli having her clothes off half the time? Totally gratuitous and superfluous. 7/10. 4. Burial Ground-Found myself really kind of bored with this one so I don't have much to say, other than the mother/son stuff was UTTERLY f***ed up! 5/10. |

(3)
The Dark (2005) DVD. ![]() (4) Voodoo Man (1944) Blu-ray. ![]() The Dark was a blind buy. It was a solid supernatural horror with decent acting and cinematography of the rugged welsh coast but a confusing storyline especially the ending. Voodoo Man is a a Poverty Row Monogram obscurity that has the great Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist and stalwart character actors John Carradine and George Zucco as his henchmen creeping about in underground caverns mixing science and magic with some lovely starlets and old school zombies. Cheap, silly, absurd, enjoyable nonsense but so watchable. Great to while an hour away and recommended to fans like me of old school "bad" b-grade horror movies. |

I kicked off my horror month with Horror High which was a fun variant on the old Jekyll and Hyde story. Very low budget, but a couple of decent kills and an interesting soundtrack.
My favourite part was when the lead rushed to chase away a cat that was supposedly trying to eat his guinea pig but they obviously had no animal trainer as the cat was just snoozing contentedly on the cage. |

#2 & #3 - 'Diary of the Dead' + 'Survival of the Dead'
"Want to turn that off, son? Turn it the f**k off. Now." ![]() It's interesting watching Romero's 2nd dead trilogy again after a few years. I'd say of the three, I still prefer Land over the other two, but Diary was better than I remembered. Still not amazing, but explored some intriguing themes. ________________

I consider it an existential weird film, akin to John Frankenheimer's Seconds. I like it a good deal, more so than Kobo Abe's novel.

Yesterday, I watched Purana Mandir aka The Haunted Temple, which is included on Mondo Macabro's Bollywood Horror boxset. PM is one of my fav Indian horror films, a fun monster movie with an awesome antagonist. It is by western standards quite silly, and the comic interludes are tedious, but in its best parts it is energetic and engrossing.

3. The Black Demon
Nowhere near as bad as the reviews suggest (but still not great). But, an odd thing for a shark movie, it was actually more tense when they were ashore. |

Just got out of Saw X. Pretty solid, a tad overhyped though. Easily better than the last three films in the series, and Tobin Bell is in top form here with the script giving him a chance to flesh out the Kramer character. But it sadly falls apart in the 3rd act for me. Still, if you're a Saw fan then you probably won't be disappointed.
