For those that care this got about a 6.5 minute ovation at Cannes, I am not sure what the barometer is anymore for these but this looks like I may enjoy it.

I enjoyed Drive Away Dolls a lot when I saw it in theaters. Revisited it last night and found it to be still enjoyable. Going to see Honey Don't later.

Four stars
The engine that drives Honey Don't!, the 2025 comedic neo-noir directed by Ethan Coen, is Margaret Qualley as Honey O'Donahue, a Bakersfield private investigator who turns the Humphrey Bogart archetype on its head and who walks on high heels from one misadventure to the next with the same ever-present expression of “You have got to be kidding me.” bewilderment on her face that I myself have had during my every waking moment in recent years. One can hardly blame her, because the sun-drenched landscape that she roams is inhabited by a minister, played by Chris Evans, who also happens to be a drug trafficker and a sexual predator targeting young women in his congregation, by a police officer, played by Aubrey Plaza, whose tough-edged exterior belies past traumas, by a troubled niece, played by Talia Ryder, and by various other assorted lost souls who conceal secret lives until they end up badly dead. In the style of classic-era noir, like The Big Sleep (1946), this film does not always connect the dots during its intricate narrative. Still, it rides high on a wave of timely allegorical relevance, trademark Coen quirkiness, eroticism, sleaze, and violence, with all of the sordid elements coming together for a sweet taste on the tongue. |

I actually hated Drive Away Dolls, watched it on digital and almost shut it off. I couldn't believe it was a Coen Brother movie (singular) but the previews for this one looked good. Then the review on this site dropped that said this was just as bad as Drive Away Dolls.
But, I was heading out to see Black Swan and figured this started right after, id give it a go and I must say, the review on this site is dead wrong (based on my opinions of the 2 movies) This was a pretty solid modern day noir with great performances, especially Chris Evans and Charlie Day. Qualley is always solid and more Aubrey Plaza is always a welcome thing. It is a brisk 80 some minutes and the end may feel a bit abrupt, but I enjoyed the ride Last edited by BigPudge; 08-22-2025 at 03:31 PM. |

I saw Honey Don't after Black Swan IMAX and it's pretty meh. The characters and performances were fine, but there wasn't much for them to do. The script is paper-thin, has nothing unique and honestly isn't memorable at all. I would have been fine skipping this one. At least it was short.

This is a showcase for Qualley and she does a great job. There was a lot of clever dialog and I enjoyed the various character's interaction. At under 90 minutes the film never bogs down. Recommended. 7/10.

Really enjoyed this. I dug Drive Away Dykes and this struck its tone much better.
Mellifluous dialogue. Each scene crackling with that noir rhythm that gives actors a chance to dance sans choreography. Tricia Cooke's edit here threads Drive-Away Dykes' earnest raunch with coarse Central Valley swirlz, a dust devil kicking up the past. |

Just got out of my showing. A discount Tuesday AMC showing at 1:40 pm. The theater was only about 20% full. I enjoyed it. If you go in not expecting Coen Brothers master level type movie making, you’ll be fine. 7/10

I thought this was pretty good. I don’t get the low scores on IMDb and Letterboxd. It was a slow burn and it was far from a perfect ending but it had enough ingredients (laughs, violence, horny) that made for a really good time at the cinema. 3.5/5
Still haven’t seen Drive Away Dolls because of the bad reception. But I question that now. So I’ll have to check it out. |
