Haven’t seen this since it first released on home video. My buddy and I rented the DVD. I never got around to watching my BD.

Loved it back then. Hopefully it still holds up.

That's the theatrical poster. We don't know what the UHD will look like yet.

Love how the ending echoes the last scene in THE THIRD MAN.

According to IMDb, "The Departed" was filmed on 35mm but released as a 2K digital intermediate. Now the question is, will Warner re-scan the original 35 mm negative, or will they simply give us a lossless HDR version of the existing 2K digital intermediate, similar to what was done for the "Shutter Island" UHD release (Paramount)? I don't recall whether "The Departed" contains scenes with digital effects that are not part of the camera negative and would therefore make the digital intermediate the final master. I could imagine that there are some digital effects during the shoot-outs. IMDb has a dedicated visual effects credits page for "The Departed": https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/f...visual_effects It makes me fear we might only get a 2K master on UHD with this one. In particular since "The Departed" is a relatively recent movie for Warner, so rather a cash cow for which they will want to maximize their profit and minimize their investments. But of course I love the film, so I sincerely hope that this is just fear-mongering from my side and that I will be mistaken...

Who cares though? HDR and 10-bit color are the reasons to buy UHDs.

I care, for one. Shutter Island looks terrible compared to his other 4K releases. The HDR does not do much for that one, that release was very underwhelming. New scans are about a lot more than just increased resolution. Even a newer, more modern 2K scan would be better than a lot of these older masters and it would make the HDR/10 bit that much better.

I wouldn't deny that going back to the negative and contructing a new DI on 2024 equipment wouldn't benefit the movie. However last I heard that rarely if ever happens, and isn't a realistic thing to expect. Also you'd then have tons of accuracy concerns. Also also if the DI was good enough for theaters its surely good enough for UHD.

At the end of the day my point is a 2k DI means nothing really as far as how good a UHD will be. Some of my favorite UHDs ever are 2k DIs. I don't have Shutter Island but I doubt it being a 2k DI is your real issue with it.

Not arguing here or trying to be rude but “rarely if ever??” I would say the majority of 4K releases have involved new, true 4K scans with a pretty high percentage of the older films being from original negative and a full restoration. Scorsese has actually done it for most of his films at this point. Shitter Island is one of the only ones I can think of that he didn’t oversee and completely restore in 4K. The rest, most would consider reference quality. I take your point though that there are plenty of 2K DI films that rival the best on this format. I’ve seen the Blu Ray for The Departed and I don’t think that would be one of them. For such a beloved film, I would not be thrilled if we got a slightly refined version of that. It needs a new scan.

It is what it is. But look at Warner's Superman II Donner Cut encode vs the UHD BD. Despite being a 2K DI, the UHD BD is notably sharper and better detailed vs the old BD. Those early/2006-7 encodes of Warner (which were a bit crippled for HD DVD) have aged pretty badly. And as mentioned, there is the HDR, wider color gamut, and 10 bit with UHD.

I don't know if I had a bad DVD or what, but there was weird artifacting in nearly every scene on my DVD. Because of that, at the time I considered the BD a pretty significant upgrade. Either way, upscale or native 4K scan, I'm looking forward to this one.

Well, if there was any movies worth doing it for, this would be one of them. It can still turn out nice, but that would be pretty great for the long term.

Especially from an archival point of view, it would make sense to build a new 4K DI with the camera negative.

1. The film does not have many effects shots.

2. Other films have already been recreated in 4K, for example Hellboy or Dawn of the Dead.

3. HDR and an extended color space as well as a higher data rate cannot replace real details.

With any luck, they might "accidentally" forget to put in a certain CGI element in the final shot

I loved Aviator, but it’s extensive use of CGi really shows and won’t have aged well.

I teased this release in the Wishlist forum. Should be an April release. Good we have a pre-order.
