But this format is a BIG deal. It's not a petty thing like a memory stick vs memory card, or USB. Adaptors and slot add-ins allow the reading of ALL these formats. Not so with High Def Media. You HAD TO HAVE one or the other. This IS a billion dollar business at stake. The loser should have bowed out ASAP as to get on with the money making. Hence...my original question.

of course...someone needs to take full responsiblity of the millions/billions of dollars loss in the decision to start this war. a lot of money has been invested and loss....someone must pay for it.

I think Ken Graffeo will step down, can't see him staying on,especially as he had the dual role of universal/hd dvd and will end up going back on many of his claims against blu-ray.

I picked "No" because of the "Trust in their ability to lead is damaged." tacked on to the yes option.

Depending on the company involved in the mess, maybe the rare one should step down, but on the whole it's just their job -- If you can't have confidence in your organization's product, how can you be expected to lead.

Sure, there comes a point where one should realize the error of their ways and begin on exit strategy (which seems to be very lacking from most of the HD DVD camp). In the big picture of things, this little HD DVD fiasco was a very very small part of the companies (especially in the case of Toshiba), so probably there'll be some repercussions a bit lower down in the food chain.

What? Resign? That's it? No Seppuku?

I thought THAT was also a Japanese tradition when having commited utter failure

P.S. This war was over on November 1st 2005 when Microsoft confirmed that they were NEVER going to use
HD DUD as the optical media in the Crapbox 360 (present or future). See articles below:

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/21442/102/

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=12661

Anynone with half a brain new that HD DUD had NO CHANCE after that announcement and that the format was destined to fail. Toshiba going ahead and releasing it anyway resulted in a COLLOSSAL waste of time for everyone and they should pay dearly for that.

I should point out those "qualifying statements" after the choices are mostly there for filler and/or humor in some cases. You can say yes for any reason you wish.

IMO this is ridiculous.

If HD-DVD had been released as the only HDP format (and had no competition) we'd all own one and be here exalting it's virtues.

It was a good product...just not good enough.

some yes and some no, some CEOs and some none CEOs. I think Toshiba needs to clean house, I think someone at Universal and Viacom needs to get fired. The person responsible for the mess at MS already lost his job, so why pin it on the CEO.

It wasn't the only format. So, what does offering up that hypothetical have to do with discussing the actions of those that forced and prolonged a war?

There should have never been a format war. Blu-ray had the support from the start to make it the clear choice for the next generation. One CE and one (then two) studios slowing adoption was a phenomenal waste of time, effort AND money for all those involved.

And people do need to be held accountable for foisting such nonsense on the consumer.

What people seem to forget is that this is business, so honestly, all involved were just doing their job and looking out for the best interest in their respective companies. None of these companies care about the consumer, they care about money.

No it is ridiculous for toshiba to even make there format when Sony tryed to

have only one. Toshiba is the one that started this war so they deserve what

they got. Anyone that saw they were alone and sony had many with them

understood this and there stupity of trying to go alone needs to be dealt with

and the person responsable fired.

You decide, you vote.

Not so much the CEO's I think, but all the paid forum goons like amirm, kosty, and so on should be barred from working in the tech industry again for deluding people into buying the OBVIOUSLY inferior and DOA format.

I don't know how technical Amir was, on many occasions it was shown he had no idea what he was talking about (which made it easier for him to BS while playing innocent) but Kosty is definitely not a technical person. He works in Marketing.
