Italian-Japanese anime TV series. MIYAZAKI Hayao participated as a story consultant and directed 6 episodes (out of 26) as well. Probably more for Miyazaki/anime/furry fans than Holmes fans.

Agreed. It's very kid-oriented, and Miyazaki got to indulge his love for the steam era with the different gadgets the Holmes and Moriarty characters use, but the connection to Doyle's canon is quite tenuous.

For me, what the Brett series did best was define the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Here we see a Holmes who needs Watson as not just an ally for action, but as an emotional crutch, as his sole dependable connection to the rest of humanity. Holmes is a shy yet showy person, a man that is simultaneously lonely and shuns people, and Watson is the one person that understands his moods well enough to stand by him through thick and thin (to a smaller extent Mrs. Hudson who we see become a more motherly figure later). By the interaction between Brett's Holmes and his two Watsons (Burke and Hardwicke), we are able to see a more consistent picture of Holmes from all the contradictions ACD saddled him with.

I see the Downey-Law movies more as Victorian buddy action films than as Holmes pictures. Law did make Watson more sexy than the avuncular figure represented in most previous versions, and he seemed to enjoy the part.
I call them Indiana Holmes and the Temple of Dumb. Jude is the only good thing about them IMO.

Sherlock Hound - English Intro (HD) - YouTube
Looks good, no doubt fans of the original Ducktales, Talespin, Rescue Rangers would enjoy it as well

What about ELEMENTARY with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu? I grew up watching the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies as a kid and reading all the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle text. I would watch any and all Sherlock Holmes films and TV. But when I heard about ELEMENTARY, I was like, OH COME ON! GIMME A BREAK! I watched the first episode to make an INFORMED opinion and I have to say I liked it. I watched all episodes of the entire series. I thought it was an interesting take on Holmes and Watson. Not to mention it was just an entertaining TV show in general. My two cents.

Agreed! Excellent show, and definitely needs to be added to the list.

That apple falls far from the tree, however, since
you ask, I will put it on the list, with reluctance.

I would have mentioned Elementary, but I think there's no BD release of it anywhere as yet?

Correct. All seasons have been released individually on DVD as well as a complete series set, but nothing on Blu-Ray as of yet.

I like Ian Richardson a great deal, even though he's quite short (I never noticed until someone pointed it out, but he has a terrific profile). Basil Rathbone is my ideal Holmes, it's just a shame they didn't do proper adaptations instead of making stuff up.

I wish Ian Richardson's two Holmes films could get a
decent transfer for blu-ray. The DVD transfers were
at the low end of that technology, and they've been
ported over onto the region B blu-rays. Looks like
mud. They are two of the best Holmes films.

Richardson is excellent in Dr Bell and Mr. Doyle and
the shortlived series it spawned, Murder Rooms. He's
not playing Holmes but he is playing the doctor who
inspired Holmes, so, in effect, he's playing Holmes.

I started out not enjoying ELEMENTARY very much, but came around to appreciating it as a character study performed by two excellent actors. Liu and Miller had good chemistry, and I especially appreciated its serious treatment of addiction as a disease and not just a quirk or a punchline. (Holmes' sex life is the punchline here, alas.) The major problem, from the perspective of a Sherlock Holmes fan, is that the mysteries are just not very "Doylean." For the most part, they lack that touch of the outre that sets Doyle's Holmes apart from your run-of-the-mill "genius" detective. Indeed, most of the individual episode plots could be dropped into just about any crime procedural with only minor modifications. And Sherlock's methods are woefully dissimilar from his literary progenitor (far too much guesswork and false starts). Again, I did wind up enjoying the show ... just not as a true adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, despite the copious "Easter eggs." (The show's in-universe apologia about this Sherlock being a man born into the wrong time was interesting, but not entirely adequate to bridge the gulf.)

Some more things to mention about ELEMENTARY. I wasn't thrilled when I heard it was going to be set in New York City. I just thought, OH GREAT. ANOTHER NEW YORK COP SHOW. I'd kinda had my fill of those. But once again, I was pleasantly surprised. I liked Aidan Quinn and the rest of the cast. And I liked the occasional/guest appearance of John Noble as Morland Holmes, Rhys Ifans as Mycroft, Natalie Dormer as Moriarty and Sean Pertwee as Lestrade. I'm really trying to sell this show to anyone who's not seen it. Give it a try. Hey, it's better than watching reruns of BAYWATCH.

Yes! I LOVE Murder Rooms. I'm just sad it only got one season, it deserved more!

I never liked Elementary.

There was also an adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles with Tom Baker as Holmes and Terence Rigby as Watson. I have this region 4 DVD with audio commentary with Tom Baker.

Thanks for this.

I remember watching this on the A&E Network.

It's not the blu-ray dot com system.

Do you have a link where it can be bought?

Oooh. That's proving to be a bit of a problem. I can't find anybody that has it any more. It has a copyright of 2014. The UPC is 9322225201408

Just finished watching this, it’s basically 8 1.5 hour movies. I thought the show was very good and enjoyed episodes 1-6 (1-12) and 8 (15-16) (not big on the one based on The Final Problem 13-14)). Holmes is not your traditional acting Holmes though, a bit of a neurotic, though he does evolve from the young neurotic to the last episodes Holmes. Luckily the time period is the traditional period of Holmes and Watson. Watson is excellent and brings in more of the ex-soldier but still in the vein of traditional Watson (apparently the actor died from a fall in the home after filming ended which is too bad). I would have preferred a second actor to play Mycroft but no big deal. I especially liked the episode based on The Musgrave Ritual and the one based on The Red-Headed League. The final episode (15-16) was a suitable send off for the show, unfortunate Alexei Panin (Watson)’ death prevented a second series or the suggested Professor Challenger series. Lestrade is also very good and apparently this was the actor who played D’Artagnan in the famous Russian late 1970’s musical version of The Three Musketeers which I have not seen. Also, the final episode (15-16), there is a short scene with some references to a dog and the actor may be the actor who played Dog in the older Russian film Heart of a Dog, though he is not listed on IMDb in the role

Thanks for the review.

I'm not likely to watch the Russian version.

If it should come out on blu-ray I'll be sure to list it.
