Now up at MovieZyng! Listed Aspect Ratio is 1.33:1 on the 4K page, and 1.78:1 on the BD one, so it's unclear what we're getting there unless it is different between the two, or it'll be both. Both sets will have 24 discs. There's also an offer for an extra 5% off and UPS upgrade with the code KRAMER

4K UHD - $249.99
Blu-ray - $149.99

It seems 2024 is the year of the impossible releases finally happening, first it was The Abyss and True Lies, then The West Wing, now Seinfeld at long last.

1.33?

Sold!

1.78?

Nah. DVDs are fine.

So we'll see. Either way, still nice to see more classic TV escape the vaults. The 4K release is an unexpected bonus.

Love the show. Very happy with my 10-year-old DVD set, but happy for folks who don't have it!

If accurate, I'd guess the 4K scans are new, the Blu masters are the ones that have been floating around cropped in syndication for 15 years just finally crapped out onto disc.

Oh well.

I'm liking the $149 price better than $199 for the blu-ray. The 4K needs to come down a little to match, lol.

Whoa, that is good. Did it drop, or did I just list the price wrong originally? I was still half-asleep when I posted it this morning, so not sure haha

Someone from Sony also confirmed it in the 4K thread. Press release coming later today according to them as well.

Well crap. The discs should still be better than Netflix, but the widescreen framing is bad for a lot of episodes. Too many awkward closeups and heads being cut off. Maybe this will be the set that gets me to make the jump to 4K.

That might be exactly why they're doing this. Very manipulative and unfair of them.

Or it might be that Netflix wanted to retain some sort of exclusivity.

Damn that’s annoying! That means I also will probably need to upgrade to 4K even though im perfectly happy with BD. Oh well, this show is too important for me to grumble.

I’m also seeing the 4K is limited edition. I’ll keep my fingers crossed the BD includes new scans.

This is gonna be basic cases/discs only.

But as long as the transfers are complete, uncut and original ratio it will be worthwhile

UPDATE OMG a 4K UHD set!!!

OMG Please be 4:3!!!!!!
I'm glad it's cases and not some awful cardboard sleeve BS!

I also wonder if the blu-ray may be released in the future in OAR. Maybe see how it goes and then a year or three down the line Sony puts out another set but in 1:33 (especially if the 4K takes off). Maybe they have to wait for the Netflix deal to expire? I probably would have bought the blu-ray set no matter the ratio, but with the 4K coming, I'll be picking that up instead.

Thinking about it, I actually hope they don’t have HDR even enabled unless they do a BR2049 and just keep it to SDR only.

Seinfeld is ideal on a dim tv anyways, the puffy shirt should not blind me. That’s just weird!

My question: Can you confirm what aspect ratio these will be? Your Blu-ray edition says 1.78:1 and the 4K UHD says 1.33:1. Is that correct that they're each different?

Answer:

Attachment 308991
That makes no sense. It would make sense if they weren't releasing the 4K, or were only releasing the blu-ray in 1.33 and 4K was 1.78 only. But this? There's no technical reason they can't just use the same master for the 4K for the blu-ray and be done with it. Bizarre. It's like they want to depress sales for the blu-ray. At least it gives me a reason to be interested in the 4K when I might not have been otherwise. I will wait for some discounts, though!

I would not assume that the blu-ray disc will be better than netflix. Sony might have a better track record than others with this stuff, but for example, Community looked radically better on Netflix than Blu-ray cause the compression on the blu-ray is horrid, they crammed too many episodes onto each disc and it looks vastly worse than Netflix does through a half-decent internet connection.
