There is a release date, it's March 31, 2025. They're not going to wait a year and a half. They will release part 1 now and part 2 later (March 2026?) with a possible 2-movie set. That's how it has always been with this kind of movies.

The good thing about Wicked is since this isn't labelled as Part One and the marketing artwork is relevant to both parts, you can replace the included Blu-ray with the UHD for Part 2 if you want them under the same volume.

Although if Universal relegated all of the extras to the 1080p disc, like Monkey Man, you'd need a different case.

I saw it. It didn't NEED to be 2.5 hours. It could have easily been a 3 hour epic.

I feel there's nothing wrong with splitting an adaptation in two parts, after all we have multi episode, 6+ hour miniseries adaptations of a lot of books.
But there is something wrong with not being upfront about it in the marketing. In the early days of this trend, movies like Kill Bill, Deathly Hallows, Mockingjay, Breaking Dawn were all upfront that you are watching Part 1 of 2 and will need to see another film to finish the story. Audiences grew tired and cynical of this trend after The Hobbit did 3 movies, so studios thought the best approach to this criticism was to be secretive. Avengers 3, Across the Spider Verse, Dune and now Wicked all tricked the audience into thinking they were watching a complete story, only to drop part 1 in the title or leave on a huge cliffhanger. Sure, internet nerds like us know the truth but it's still deceptive marketing that most were fooled by. Whether or not Wicked should be 2 parts, it's guilty of duping the average person into buying two tickets when they thought they only needed one. Which is purely about money, not story. |
