No, the encode was always bad, same with some other early VS releases like Death Wish 2 (which has a quite awful encode). Doesn't mean it wasn't the best available 4K of the movie though, encode and all

I also waited for exactly a release like this. If VS nail their encoding at the prices they ask, I’m fine with it but otherwise, no thank you. Very, very happy with what Arrow are doing this month and the leaks are surely not all the releases.

It pisses me off that the BBFC are such babies about Death Wish II. An Arrow release would be ace.

I wrote this back in 2022 in the midst of a discussion on its compression.

Not sure why people constantly prop up VS as a great label and recommend people purchase their discs, then.

It did, along with the talk of their saturation running quite hot (which I felt their 4K of TCM2 was a bit boosted).

You’re talking about a heavily zoomed-in cap, and none of the rest of the comparisons show any issue. For all we know this could be an in-house encode and not a FIM one, so it may not be any better.

Being blunt, in most comparisons the grain is a bit too digital looking and crunchy. Having enjoyed the movie in motion multiple times the encoding is not great. The sky here is not good looking, and the grain is clumpy and smeary. Again here, a very clumpy and digital sky. Much more subtle here, but on the stairs the grain is uneven and patchy.

You said nobody talked about the encode when the disc came out, I'm just showing you they certainly did. Not only that, across those 2-3 pages I'd linked multiple members mentioned the disc looking too saturated/overcooked, an issue well known to plague VS discs during that time - and a page or two later in thread, Geoff also comes in and points towards the encode, lol. Nobody is calling the VS a disaster by a long shot but the encode was always known to be the weakest aspect of it.

Most of their discs now are done by FiM and whatever other place that doesn't stink. This is why there's rarely any hooplah about their discs unless an error pops up like Phase-IV. This is definitely one I'll be upgrading and passing VS's disc on the 'ol selling farm.

The UK rights were sadly absconded by Final Cut. They released a BD last month.

Not a fan of double dipping on a 4K but this might be an exception.

Since the UHD was just released by Turbine with DV, encoded by LSP, it may be the same disc for Arrow? Here's a German and English review:

Yep. Me too. And surely a tasty edition of Dressed To Kill can't be too far off from Arrow? I suspect patience will pay off on that one too
