I'm siding with Filmmaker on this. FiM is a "prestige" brand now, I wouldn't put turning down jobs past them if they deem an underlying source questionable or below their working standards. Reputation is a commodity for businesses - reputable ones, at least. Also, just because it's not specified, doesn't mean it's not happening. This could very well be a fresh scan/new master and not be part of the specs, although that part is less likely to happen. I should think a label would want to advertise that part.

They've encoded some wank looking transfers for a number of labels.

Why?

Because it's work.

When’s the last time they encoded a so-called wank-looking transfer? Early in their career when they did have to take any and all jobs? Because I haven’t seen wank-looking (what does a wank look like, anyway?) from them really at all, certainly not over the last few years.

Here’s another way to look at this. The 1080p U.S BD of DAYBREAKERS was clearly sharper and more precise than the 4K, so one of two things happened:

1. The studio used a filmout for the BD and the 4K, but then used some DNR or some encoding techniques to try to ameliorate the jaggies on some edges (that are admittedly the Achilles heel of the BD) but unfortunately went way too far with it, resulting in a soft, blurry mess of a picture. If that’s the case, FiM won’t use those same techniques, so we’ll get back to the sharpness of the 1080p (and if the studio wants to take the edge off the jaggies, FiM will be far more adept at doing so without throwing away babies with that bathwater).

2. The studio used a shitty filmout for 4K but the original DI for the BD, in which case, it is not dazed and confused to feel confident FiM will be able to go back to that DI and, again, get us the sharpness of the BD, rather than the blurriness of the 4K.

And that’s why they don’t have to brag about a new restoration—because one isn’t needed. The BD looked great. Take that source and encode it for 4K in FiM’s hands, then sit back and thank God for modern luxuries.

It was wank, not yank. Of course you can always yank your crank, in which case you will be 'wanking' or 'fapping'. I'm from the hills of Tennessee and I know all of these colloquial terms. Don't you ever watch any telly from ol' Blighty?

Generally I've found that most of these terms seem to refer to something sexual, especially self-pleasuring in a literal sense, but are actually implying some negative connotation, such as an idiot or just something of questionable quality.

I find it hard to believe that you are so unfamiliar with all of these terms, and think that you are just being a tosser, Mr. Peter Ian Staker.

Sure, I know it's not a big deal in the grand scheme. I just don't think that Fidelity want to posit themselves as a "if you have to aks the price then you can't afford it" kinda company, their services are available to all and that's the way it should be.

Fidelity aren't mastering it tho, they're just encoding it. Big difference. Although, and I don't know if this is public knowledge but I'll say it now that the disc is out, Fidelity actually did the restoration and grading on A Bridge Too Far and did a bloody good job IMO. But sometimes an encode is just an encode, and it would appear that Daybreakers is one such job. There's no bragging about a new restoration because there isn't one.

The copium here is strong. Hoping for the best, but genuinely expecting it to be the same as the LG UHD but with slightly better compression.
