Pre-ordered the Collector's edition. I thought Umbrella didn't charge until shipping, but I received a charge this morning. Anyone know if they do a pending charge that falls off, or will it lock that payment in now?

Preordered the box set. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I feel like Umbrella and Second Sight both excel at packaging but the keepcases always leave a lot to be desired. They feel cheap compared to the rigid boxes.

But is this not the existing filmout transfer that's softer than Softy McSoftface? All the tat and encoding prowess in the world can only do so much if so.

How bad is the current LG 4K? If I can help it I'd rather get that for $20 and in a couple days from Amazon.

Buyers of the other one were not enamored with the picture which is probably why I never pulled the trigger, I wonder if this will be better. Loved the movie.

Who knows until everyone knows? But why in the world would Umbrella pay for FiM, and why would an authoring house of their prestige sign on, if the source is compromised? I have to assume they’ll be working, at minimum, from the superior source used for the 1080p Blu-ray.

A job is a job, Fidelity encode what they're given unless they're working on the actual restoration or grading. Nothing's been said about a new mastering either way but if it were you'd think it'd be referenced in the promo bumpf. A big hmmmmmm until proven otherwise.

You may be right but:

1) FiM has a peerless reputation. I’m not inclined to think they’d risk tarnishing it by taking a job using a poor source (though the BFI of SEVEN SAMURAI may prove to be the Achilles heel in my argument).

2) Why would Umbrella crow about a new restoration when there’s never been a 4K release of the title in Australia? Wouldn’t “Australian 4K premiere” make more sense as a pitch than “better than a release from halfway around the world”? Australians are their primary target audience, not us importers.

We won’t know until we know but, as an American, I’m optimistic. As a Brit, it’s your birthright, or course, to be a cynic.

I don't see any correlation between Fidelity's reputation and the quality of the product they're aksed to encode because one has no effect on the other. If a company wants to Fidelity an absolute turd-burger of a source then it's their money. Fidelity may well politely inquire if a betterer source is available, but the answer is usually no.

Why would anyone keep quiet about a new restoration of x movie just because it was the premiere of that edition in that country? Does the internet not exist in Australia? A Bridge Too Far is having its UHD world premiere Down Under and yet despite being aimed at "Aussies only" still manages to mention it's a new restoration at least three times on their webshite.

There's being an optimist, then there's being...well, you. And I still don't get it after all this time

FiM is an elite authoring house. They don’t have to take every job offer that comes their way. They have every right to uphold the standards they’re known for by saying “we can’t polish turds and we don’t want our services associated with turds and if all you can offer is as a source is a turd, you should spend less money than we’re gonna charge by hiring a compressionist who works out of their garage.” Turning down opportunities because they’re problematic or don’t jibe well with the company’s mission is a thing some businesses do, ya know.

And on your second point, Umbrella hasn’t bragged anywhere in their listing that they managed to snag the great David MacKenzie/FiM for (to my knowledge) the very first time to encode one of their discs, so maybe they just don’t peacock all the things you might wish they would (A BRIDGE TOO FAR is from 1977, where crowing about a restoration means something; DAYBREAKERS is fifteen years old—not apples to apples). At the end of the day, no one knows. We’ll see. I’m optimistic enough that FiM’s pedigree will bring the goods (I can’t think of a single FiM 4K job that looked worse than a preceding 1080p BD, so if your fears comes to light, DAYBREAKERS will be the first one) that I immediately put in my preorder. If you wanna sit over there with your arms crossed and a bitter pout on your puss, you go right ahead. If I’m wrong, I can sell it and (being strictly limited) lose nothing. If you’re wrong, you’ll have to settle for the standard release instead of the limited, and where I come from, we think that’s gross, LOL.

The LG 4K is not good, but yet still better than the Blu-ray which is plagued with noise artifacts. I would wager this Umbrella is the same transfer, as they advertise in the details usually when they are doing a new transfer.

I didn't know you had Fidelity's mission statement pinned up on your bedroom wall. Huh. I think you're letting this "elite" thing go to your head as they've encoded all sorts over the years (and have just put out some rather old HD masters for that Wilder/Pryor BD set for Indicator).

But Fidelity have just embarked on a new business relationship with Umbrella/Via/Imprint/whatever they're called, Bridge is the first title they did for them and personally speaking I wouldn't then tell my brand new clients to take a running jump if offered a less than stellar source to encode on another movie. If it's the best available source for that version provided by the rights holders then there's literally nothing I can do about it. And if I've done the best I can with it then my "reputation" is intact.

You sure like to argue “we don’t know until we know”s until the cows come home, Geoff. I’ll see you again when this release comes out and we’ll see. If I took a bad gamble, I’m confident I can sell it without losing a dime, so I don’t know what else to tell ya.
