Ah yes, another victim of the "best picture winner" curse. Where it's not really a bad movie at all but due to the fact it won best picture at the Oscars, it gets a lot of hate.

Anthony Minghella certainly had an old Hollywood spirit and it's unfortunate that his work has been largely overlooked these days. The English Patient and Cold Mountain were throwbacks in a changing Hollywood landscape. They're probably more seen as old-fashioned these days, even more so than the movie they tried to evoke.
Shame he died when he did. I would've loved to see what he'd be doing right now. |
