Looks good not great, but a beautifully acted film by all. If I were voting I would give the Oscar to Viggo Mortensen in "Eastern Promises", but he should have won for "History of Violence" which he was never even nominated

Sounds great. I missed this movie in theaters, will give it a rent first though.
I still hope that Daniel Day Lewis will win the Oscar...

No need to hope. It's almost a sure thing!

If he doesn't, I'll be rioting in the streets and anyone is free to join me.

So I watched this for the first time in awhile last night and either I forgot or am just confused.

SPOILER ALERT!

At the end when his car explodes and he throws his watch and wallet in the car faking his death after he got the 80k bonus along with a new contract to not shake down his firm. Didnt he end up doing that at the end with those exposing reports for unorth? Since unorth was a client of his firm?

So basically what I'm saying is did he become a ghost in that his firm thought he was dead? Or was he just like oh well I needed a way out from being the janitor.

I believe he faked his death to throw the assassins and by extension, U-North, off of his trail. Karen Crowder, CEO of U-North, decided to have Michael killed because he believed that Arthur's suicide was faked and Arthur was really murdered. It was the standard slippery slope of committing one crime to cover up another.

Michael reached the end of his rope when he learned that Kenner, Bach & Ledeen (his law firm) was merging with a firm in London and that was probably the best opportunity to ask for a bonus. He needed to pay the mob right away or they would probably hurt him or his alcoholic brother. His firm did learn that he was killed and he had a very small window to get Karen pay him $10M to help cover up Arthur's misdeeds.

Always nice to revisit a title after some time and be reminded how happy you are it is in your collection. Watched this last night for the 1st time in probably a year and 1/2..freaking awesome. Never predictable and performances are great across the board. Would put it right along Out of Sight as Clooney's best to date.

Yeah, I love this movie too.
I just looked for it and don't see it in my collection. That's a fricken crime. I've seen it in bargain bins at times, but must've thought I already had it.
I gotta get it, cause with you reviving the thread, I want to watch this movie with the great acting again!

Exactly right on both counts.

It is a great movie and it's exactly the kind of 'out of sight, out of mind' movie that I love having immediate access to.

And yeah, when I bought and watched it last year (or maybe two years ago) I was very pleasantly surprised that it not only held up, it was actually bettered than I remembered from the first viewing.

Yep, I feel the same. Movie ages REALLY well. Tom Wilkinson's monologue at the beginning alone almost makes this a great movie, never mind all the great stuff after. Tempted to give it another watch...

Awesome film with 2 of a couple fav actors in Clooney and Wilkinson. Something that has always stuck with me --->
[Show spoiler]* SPOILER *

Anyone else love how the end/credits was filmed? Clooney just sitting in the cab grasping everything that had happened to and around him? And we're just waiting for him to physically breakdown but we know he did emotionally. Superb acting all around.

One of the best movies from an overall great year for movies. Still waiting on Gilroy to live up the promise he showed with this, though.

Reminded me a lot of the ending of The Long Good Friday. Clooney and Hoskins both conveyed a lot with just what was going on in their eyes.

Thumbs up

Watched this tonight, what a superb film. I don't know if I caught every single plot point, but in any case it's a terrific thriller. Thanks to all for the enthusiastic recommendations.

I didn't find this to be that great and Clooney is not that good of an actor. He is good enough when he is playing a goofball like he did in O, Brother. He leaves a lot to be desired as a serious actor.

Clooney is a lot like Cruise. Great actors, but questionable people.

Wait, what? Since when?!?
Cruise is the nicest guy to work with and knows the name of everyone on set and I have heard little bad about George bar practical jokes
