I held off on the Arrow for a number of reasons. But I'm glad 88 Films is doing the UHD of this one.

As i'm typing, I'm watching Lady Hermit. Man, it's crazy to think that HK films are in 4K now. It was such a ***** to get them in the HD era. And now we're getting this one in 4K? Ooof.

I imported the old 88 Films BD, then picked up the Arrow BD when it came out. Now I can't decide whether to pick this one up or wait and see if Arrow upgrades it over here as well.

  • Frame cuts here and there, but nothing like what happened soon after at Celestial Pictures (with a total of minutes missing as opposed to seconds). Perhaps the most notable thing missing was about 22 frames (possibly at a reel change, but I can't say for sure) [video].
  • Some zoomed shots (possibly to cover damage) and different frames in one shot (incorrectly chosen originally or sub-optimal restoration? Hard to say without a print reference) [video].
  • One crossfade had doubled frames (possibly to conceal damage), ultimately resulting in a four-second difference [video].
  • Different crossfade and selection of frames (and some doubled) for the final shot [video].

This will be the UHD master commissioned by Celestial Pictures but regraded in Dolby Vision.

2020 88 Films Blu-ray:

UHD, as delivered by Celestial Pictures:

2025 88 Films disc:

Notes:
  • Resized due to uploading constraints.
  • The framing on the first master (circa 2002) was zoomed on a few shots, but it wasn't like that for the entire duration.

May be in the minority but the 2025 seems a bit bright? I kind of like that *as delivered* look more as I imagine the DV layer on top. Mabe with a few small nudges toward the 2025, but not all the way.

The grading is wrong on the "as delivered".

Was the grading that wrong on the 2020 disc then? Despite the zoom, the 2025 shot seems to crank up the intensity of the key and back lights, almost completely illuminating the set. The clarity is indeed nice, but considering the time period, it gives the setting more of an artificial appearance in my opinion. Obviously SB movies are quite known for such looks, but many of the restorations, from Arrow for example, have given the films a bit more of an organic appearance. But if this the intended look, I'll be happy since I love the film.

I like the third image (i.e. what we're going to get) the best. It looks like film from the 1960s.

The BD disc should also be improved or would it be the same disc from 2020? I still don´t have 4k, but tempted to double dip for the extras (if available on the bluray and not only the 4K)

Heads-up, this will no longer come in a rigid slipcase, but just a slipcover now according to 88 Film's site.

Honestly this doesn't bother me, less shelf space.
But doing it on the sneak after people have preordered is shady AF.

It was never intended to have a rigid slip. We always wanted to it match the existing Shaw Bros collection.

The packaging was listed incorrectly by a former employee. Apologies if that’s caused annoyance but we haven’t changed any plans.

This is a blind buy for me, but I recently re-watched "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and want to see other "wuxia" films (a term I only recently learned). I've always been intrigued by the title of this one.

Ordered from diabolikdvd in hopes it may ship early.

Rather poor communication in my opinion. Regardless of how it happened, 88 should have informed the public on social media about the mistake/change.
