If people shouldn't bother buying HD BD movies with a SD TV, why should they bother paying $60 for HD BD games which look VERY bad on SD televisions, as sometimes the text is barely readable? Whereas BD movies look just as good if not better then DVDs on SD TVs?

I don't see why you would buy your favorite moves in SD now, only to rebuy them again on BD when you get an HDTV.

I just dont get it.

Unless you plan on having a SD television for the rest of your life.

I think the recommendation is to hold off on the spending until they can afford an HDTV. There are hardly any games anyway, and not the most comprehensive list of blu-ray movies. Save up, buy that nice HDTV set, and then take advantage of blu-ray for real when there is more market penetration and more games and movies to choose from.

I agree with the others who are saying if you don't have an HD-ready TV, don't bother.
You do realize that there is/was a problem with that and that Sony is addressing it with firmware updates? I highly doubt it was intentional to drive new games. Even when the Xbox 360 came out they also had their share or compatability issues.

No, I didn't realize that. Any links? I'm not finding news of it. Thanx.

NP. I found that info on the PS3 forums. Here is a typical thread on the subject:http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...95683#M1110080
There are a bunch more on the subject in the firmware threads and spread across the forums in general. I only glanced over them as I dont have any PS2 games. I know I have seen it on some PS3 sites also, just cant remember off the top of my head. Hope that helps.

yup. I alluded to this a few posts back:

While on a DVD you get the 480 pixel compression noise as is.

Anyway, again the main reason to buy BDs now to me is: Friends keep asking me if I have Cars on DVD. And I answer, nope, I'll buy it on BD.

Why buy a movie in 345,600 interlaced pixels when you can buy it in 2,073,600 progressive pixels?

hello i have a sd tv and a ps3 and saving for that hd tv and i still buy bd as well as games and even though it is like dvd i don't have to spend money on them later. when best buy has them buy1 get1 free at $30 that $15 each same as dvds now. I do enjoy them on an hd when i bring my ps3 over to a friend house and we play games or watch a movie, it is awsome and even better than most movies on his ms hd add on.

i have only 9 title right now it still supports bd

but actually in my opinion there are legitimate reasons to buy HD titles even if you can only play them in a normal TV only for now: one of them is money

IF you buy a title on DVD now, then, you will have to buy it again if you want to watch it on HD when you get the HDTV. Buy in HD now, watch in SD, watch in HD later

That's one reason i made up the Apocalist. To know for sure what not to buy in DVD anymore and get in HD.

Also, if the downconversion is done properly from the 1080p, you're bound to get a better image, as most DVD transfers are optimized to not have artifacts on 480i CRTs (they are vertically filtered or "softened") so the 1080p downconvert would probably look sharper (and maybe twitter more on a 480i TV )
Second, the image might look cleaner and less noisy specially the colors, cus you'll have downconverted the 1080p compression noise and grain to less than a 4th its size, and then, on-display noise will be at the limits of the 480 display electronics. ^^ All that could very well be, but most people won't ever see those differences with the naked eye and most people would probably agree that it just isn't worth the extra costs involved.

That's a big time "law of diminishing returns" at play in what you're talking about, even if it's technically true.

I just think it's a order of operations/prioritizing issue.

Money issue? Let's see: A $500-$600 game console supported by $60 a pop games and on average $25-$30 a pop Blu-Ray movies.

This stuff adds up quick! If someone can throw down money like this, then how in the world could they not at least buy a nice CRT HD tube for under a grand somewhere or even a halfway decent LCD HDTV can be bought for about a grand now.

I just don't see it as being a "money" problem.

If I were starting from scratch, on the fence, it just seems to be common sense that I'd target my first priority to be my HDTV and work my way down from there in terms of HD sources.

For me, I'd save up first and get the HDTV and then start feeing it HD sources...not the way other around.

Sorry, folks, but I still just do not see any point whatsoever in buying HD games and movies and playing them on non HDTV's. I certainly would not recommend or endorse it under any circumstances.

If you're happy with it? More power to you, but I still think it's pretty pointless myself. *shrugs*

EDIT: You know what? I'm going to kind of argue against myself for a second:

The PS3 does it all, including SD DVD's. It's an all in one box that can take care of you now with PS1 and PS2 games and for the future with BD and PS3 games. It has all the connections you need for old TV's or new TV's.

I guess you could do a hell of a lot worse. It'll serve you for many years to come on old and new technology.
