Original Aspect Ratio every time.
I fully expect to see Lawrence of Arabia as David Lean intended, not with the edges stuck in my speakers. I also fully expect Gone with the Wind to have black bars down the sides and not zoomed to fill the screen, ie composed... exactly as Mr Selznick made it. |

A movie should not be cropped from say 2:35.1 to 1:85.1 just to fill the screen up. That is just plain asinine, and it’s already something you can do with your remote anyway. Furthermore, it would take up too much disc space, cost too much money, and ruin the movie as it’s not intended to be seen that way. The funny thing is, I never even notice the black bars because I’m actually focused on watching the movie. What a concept! Get over it people and start concentrating on what your getting by actually having the black bars.

Could someone take this thread out and shoot it? The original poster seems confused as I have never seen a single Blu-ray movie that was available in different aspect ratios.
What's next, a thread about how people like Blu-ray Discs recorded in SP instead of LP or SLP? Or maybe how BDs recorded at 45 RPM are better than those recorded at 33 RPM? |

I'm extremely worried that 1.37 movies will be cropped to 1.85 at some point (a la The Shining). I'm also concerned that people will refuse to watch pillarboxed movies the way some refuse to watch black and white.
Literally, I sometimes lose sleep. |

I like to show friends and family the 5 HDTVs we have, and then go on to explain the benefits of Blu ray, HDMI, and the 16:9 aspect ratio. Later, I would say you can't go wrong in getting me a movie for the holidays. When Christmas time comes around, I get all excited about the good food, seeing old friends, and someone passing me a small flat gift wrapped rectungular box. I only hope it is not a movie I already own. I rush to open it. My heart sinks when I see its a DVD with the words 'Full Screen' printed on the cover. A older lady bent over a bit by age, separates herself from the crownd in the kitchen, walks up to me slowly, and puts a damp hand gently on my back and says in a soft voice: "How do you like your gift?" Biting my lips I say, "Its fine, just fine, I really like it". "Good, I will see to it that I get you something like it next year! Do people not get it? Full screen chops the left and right sides of the picture. Like someone else posted here, I've been buying widescreen movies for as long as I can remember. If a movie wasn't available in widescreen, I wouldn't buy it. Why is this even an issue? With Blu-ray you see the movie as close to how the director intended as possible. Why would anyone want anything less? Black bars!

So while technically the DVD says "Widescreen" it is not OAR and is in fact "Formatted to fit a 16x9 screen". I can easily see this happening on BD, with movies being cropped to fit 16x9. Why? I couldn't tell you. I worked at Blockbuster for a year and I had some woman calling me and asking how to make the movie fullscreen and she kept saying "It's like half a picture! Its half a picture!" and I told her "Ma'am, the movie is supposed to look like that, that is how it was filmed, good bye." But for all the nuts who want fullscreen, just hit zoom. |

I just had this argument with a friend of the family a few days ago. It started to get heated, so I backed off short of making fun of their choice. Then, again, maybe I eased a joke in there slightly before it got heated. I can't remember.

Yep. I have some movies in these ratios on DVD. Don't bother me at all.

if people are using a sdtv and watching a BD disc, they can just use the zoom option to "get rid of black bars" and fill the screen. Its not like they care about aspect ratios anyway. They just want to see image on the entire screen and that will get the job done.
