this happened to me at best buy also, but it was a long while ago and with a dvd. it happened not long before i remembered hearing something about bestbuy sealing up returned merchandise and still selling it as new, although i heard that through people and was probably just rumor since i never saw anything on the news about it.

Awesome story. Not only were you able to get your money back but, in the long run, did a great service to other customers and Best Buy by getting those other damage sets off the shelf. If they hadn't gone through all those others, just think of how many more people would have had to go back to the store because theirs didn't work either

I used to work at a BB, and I can't tell you how many visibly upset ppl I've seen up at the Customer Service desk when trying to return something. Just one more reason I didn't want to stick around to be a BB Manager. They have a tough job. I once had a guy who wanted me to take 10% off the TV, receiver, and speakers he was buying. He thought that since he was buying so much that he deserved a price break.
If you spend that kind of cash when the markups are so large any customer deserves that small break. Yet another reason to buy from mom and pop or online.

For sure do the shake test. This is also important if you have a "loose disk" in the package as it could be damaged if slidding around.

Actually it's policy in other stores as well. I've seen this situation before and indeed, you need to contact customer service of the studio. It's dumb though that they don't have this on hand since it's been an issue in the last 5 years. This procedure is neccessary for two reasons. 1.How do they know you just didn't take the disc at home and made this story up. 2. If they take it back, they won't be reimbursed by the distributor and it will be considered as a loss for them. Given the small margins made on DVDs in general they won't risk it. Again this isn't just a Best Buy thing. It happens to other stores that sell DVD products as well.

I also picked up a BD title with a blank disc inside. It was sealed in plastic with the security stickers in place. BB agreed to replace it for the same title only after explaining the situation to a skeptical manager. But I did get a replacement. They now place all BDs inside plastic security cases.
