I am not saying that there is no difference. Bluray picture is better, but the experts say that it is not as big of a difference as it was going from vhs to dvd. I guess that as I get older, I don't just blindly accept as much crap from companies as I used to. It only cost this because people will buy it at that price. If they were not selling for that price, the the price would come down. Seems like some people will pay anything and think it is a great deal. And yes I do like a lot of the extras. I already have several thousand dollars in my system at home. My receiver will not support hdmi. Can't justify getting a new one until something goes wrong with the old one.

Your setup sucks if you don't notice much of a difference. Blu-ray blows DVD out of the water.

Default Why so expensive?

There is a good way to buy blu ray and a bad way. I say bad because I really mean a less expensive way. But, to access that way you have to be willing to wait a little while, sometimes a long while, then jump when you see sales.

I've found that blu rays go on sale all the time online, and less in main walk in stores. Keep you eyes on the hot deals forum here, watch for buy one get ones at amazon.com, watch jr.com. I'm sure there are others.

The way I do it is I scan these sites and wait for sales, then catch up on the movies I want to buy. When blu rays are NOT on sale at amazon, I made a list of the movies I'd like to own and wrote down the non-sales prices. I use that to compare so I know when an online place is acting they are having a sale as opposed to actually HAVING a sale. Its some up front work, but it pays off later on.

As an example, I really wanted Crimson Tide. It sold for 20.95 cents on amazon shortly after it first came out. A little while later, I was checking their prices and saw they had a sale on that one blu ray for 15.00. I called them on it and they refunded the diff.

Look for sales, look for price reductions. Never pay retail...

obviously not really we paid over $700 for our first dvd player then we got an extra one around x-mas like 1999 (big daddy on dvd early 2000 was like $25) that was like $350........ up until early 2006 dvd prices were still $18-23 for new movies so lets end the "im shocked" at these prices

No my setup doesn't suck. Why does everyone have to attack someone or there system. You think it will hurt my feelings or something. I did a lot of research and most of the reviews I have read are still saying that you might want to hold off buying a bluray, because of how cheap upscaling dvd players are and how little difference there is. Not that there isn't a difference, but that it is not huge. I will try and find some of the links I read.

I am one for low prices and sales. However, I do get very annoyed when people assert that blu-ray is marginally better than dvd and doesn't deserve a premium. I hate dvds so bad now. I just cannot watch them. They are worse than my Comcast cable. It is better to just complain about prices like I do. Also, blame people like me who can't resist some titles even at full price. For example, on Tuesday 11 I will be getting:

No Country for Old Men @ $23.95
Independence Day @ 27.95
Hitman @ 27.95
I Robot @ 27.95

I am so weak.

I would have to agree that the LEAP from VHS to DVD is greater than the Upconverted To Blu leap..... but the difference in Upconverted-to-Blu is still VERY noticeable..... so to each-his-own..... But DVD was very eye-opening when it first came out.

I don't think he ever said he couldn't really notice the difference..... he was just saying the jump wasn't as great as it was from VHS to DVD..... but I'd like to point out that the jump in price from DVD to Blu Ray was a lot higher from VHS to DVD, than it is for DVD to Blu.... and taking into account the CPI, it's staggering. That being considered, the decision to switch from Upconverted, to Blu, is an easier one to make.

Not attacking, I just feel bad for you if you don't notice the difference. Something is missing there if that's the case.

lol almost 99% of the people here have FIRST hand knowledge of blu-ray on High quality systems what some reviewer says doesn’t mean a thing to anyone here why don’t you go to a real quality A/V store and actually do real research I can go find you articles on the internet that defend just about any point on any issue lol lets get serious.

+1 I remember during the advent of DVD, Warner was the first to offer a DVD for $14.99. Now, catalog DVDs can be found for $5. It'll take a little time for the prices to come down. Blu-ray is just a teenager right now, it'll settle down.

If you feel this way then you can save a lot of money by not buying a blu-ray player and only buying DVD's. I'm sure your HD DVD player already upscales.

you can't go by what other people say, even by what you see at a best buy or wal-mart lol, I was at best buy last night buying the rookie (for 24.99) and saw a 60'' KURO running a Sony dvd player with a DVD demo playing based on that then why would you even buy an HDTV like some people are probly doing, look into things yourself rather than take what others give you.
