Well it was 1499 now its 1700 and change. Still a great deal. Check out the specs. I have the 73" version. Best TV I've ever bought.

I noticed a lot of folks on forums sure are sarcastic and act like they know it all. It must be because of the lack of face to face. Hmmmm.

Does anyone know why Consumer Reports rates the Pioneer Kuros below last years Panasonic 7 series?

I would need to read the Consumer reports article again. Consumer Reports is good source for general info. Most likely Consumer reports felt the Panasonics were a better value since they cost less then the Pioneer models. Consumer Reports is not looking for important BLU-RAY owner special features like true 24P refresh rates. The Pioneer has true 72HZ 3:3 pulldown and currently has the best picture quality compared to any existing flat panel display.
A better review of displays can be found from Widescreen Review, Ultimate A/V magazine, Home theater magazine, and Sound and Vision. All of those magazines rate the Pioneer displays as the best quality in terms of picture quality. The Pioneer costs more then other displays and might not be the best value.

Default Panny 800 or 850

They are both about $2500, which is the top of my budget. I sit about 8-10ft away from the set and it will be facing a window with blinds on it. So a good anti-glare coating is a must. The obvious difference between the two is 720p vs 1080p and I am a bit scared of going from a 1080p DLP to a 720p plasma. Native 24p for blu-ray would also be a plus, but I don't know how noticable that really is. The set will be used about 60% for sattelite from Directv (mostly HD), 30% dvd/BD, and 10% PS3 gaming. Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
The new panasonics coming out will have a native contrast ratio of 30,000:1... I bet it will blow the pioneer out of the water. Plus 24p at 2:2 pull down 48hz... it will be awesome and worth waiting for... the and of april perhaps they say. The 850 will be available later in the year and have IPTV built-in. They are THX panels. Better than pioneer. As for the 85... probably pretty close. I have the PZ750 which is awesome in itself. I'd say do the new panasonic 800 even tho it's not on your list... it'll be better to have 1080p and 30,000:1 than any pioneer.

Well, if everyone is gonna refer to consumer reports (yuck) you might as well believe what you refer to. The panasonic 7 series is excellent!!!!! Best TV I have ever freakin had. Richer colors than the pioneer... altho not 24p yet. The 8xx series will be true 24p in 2:2 pulldown... 48hz. They will eat pioneer for lunch. They will be about 20 to 30 lbs lighter this year too... I am drooling to see the 800u. I may sell my 750u off and trade up... even tho I only had it a few months.. lol.

No sarcasm whatsoever. I don't know everything, but the general rule of thumb these days is that Plasma currently offers the best PQ. Apparently the new laser technology may rival that, but until such time that it hits the market, Plasma is the deal.

No matter what... you will end up with a TV that'll be awesome. The new panasonic does 24p but 2:3 pulldown... it'll look fine. The older 7xx series doesn't do it at all. The panasonics have great color reproduction. Future pioneer panels will be coming from panasonic. The 800 series will do 2:2... more efficient than 3:3.
Anyways... I would do the new panasonics. The pioneer kuro's are old now relatively speaking... i'd like to see the 800 or 850 compared to the kuro... i bet it would whoop it's butt ;-)

Hey man, I just recently bought the Pioneer 4280 and it is an amazing set of course it was between that and a Panny. Both plasmas are awesome and highly recommended just take a look at the thread. To me the Pioneers looked a bit better. Wish you the best of luck on your new buy I bet you will be happy. Also, if your concerned of the Pioneer being only 768p don't worry the set looks amazing on blu-rays, I was concerned with the same thing then I got over it fast when I popped one in

Maybe for a few months too ;-) LOL. That's ok... I replace my TV every few months anyways... hehehe. It'll be interesting to see how pioneer will use the panasonic panels it'll be getting. Can a pioneer TV with it's controlling electronics produce a better picture on the same panel ya' wonder. It shall be soon seen. I think pioneer may have given panasonic it's kuro formula (to make better fried chicken of course)

Thumbs up

it sounds like you are really wanting to make the correct decision, which is good. It may be a ***** but take your BD player down there and hook it up to each TV. Play a movie, play a game, whatever. Adjust to YOUR likeing. Either way they are getting a sale and you KNOW which IS better, for you.

Drooling's not the word! I can tell when you're looking at Panasonic's web site 'cause a river of drool flows past my cubical!

And yeah, I don't see what the big deal is with Consumer Reports. I guess its OK for basic info, but any true aficionado would be nuts to take their word for anything!

:s/months/minutes :-)

I dunno about that. I read in the press release that Pioneer had accepted that some of their secret sauce would have to be shared with Panasonic, but they're still keeping a lot of their IP under wraps.

It seems that Pioneer and Panasonic leapfrog each other. The Kuros are the current king, but I would be surpried if they were dethroned by the new Pannies. Then in a few months maybe the next generation of Kuros will be on top again. Regardless of whether one gets a Pioneer or a Panasonic, a visual treat is in store! (/me looks sadly at his 32" Sharp LCD TV...)
