Since the MAJORITY of forums and Blogs were heavily DUD lopsided and Jackasses like Rob Enderle and Ken Graffeo incessantly flapped their corrupt shill gums in favor of the DUD... I actually think the war would've been over sooner without the Internet. The Bricks & Mortars were always strongly lopsided towards Blu-Ray and it's higher cost and margins (more money in their pocket) and they KNEW the format that the PS3 and Disney supported would end up winning the war. Without the internet, the B&M's would have ended this either sooner or at the exact same time (January 2008 CES).

The bottom line is that the PS3 needed to be in the field for at least a full year in order for the DUD to die so January 2007 CES was out of the question... leaving the next logical date to be the January 2008 CES.

The sheer amount of HD DUD FUD that was proliferated by the Internet, IMHO, was vastly responsible for 90% of HD DUD's sales volume (think pimply Crapbox360 fanboys ).

Bricks and mortar AV stores are losing out with Blu ray. They don't make anything on PS3's and they don't sell game software.

HD-DVD did a few things right. They got their spec down on day 1, they went region free and they took what studios they could. To me thats all pluses.

However, they under estimated the power of the average gamer.

Brick and mortat AV stores loosing heh ? like in december when without PS3, HW sale were 65:35 in favor of blu-ray with much bigger margins on HW compare to HD DVD ?

so they (HD DVD) had few small pluses but more big minuses...

I was wondering about the very different mode of support between hd dvd and bd.

It appears to me that there were more of high profile hd dvd supporters saying, "BUY HD DVD".

The high profile BD supporters by and large were more conservative saying "WAIT IT OUT".

That's likely the best signal that something's not right in the type of supporters each side was gathering, even on the supposedly 'open' internet.

Do you think the "War" would've lasted longer if there was no internet?
hard to say, let's face it many people that I know found the info through normal traditional channels (TV news, newspapers...) it was not just from magazines (that yes could take a month to pass it). Let's face it when companies say "it is over" it is over, not only when J6P heard of it. On the other hand I think HD DVD did try and use the internet (why guys like Amir, Drunken TIvo guy, RDjam.........) where around to help con simple minded people and prolonging the war.

We could also look at it in a different way. If there were no internet would MS have picked a side? in 2005 when everything was going wrong for HD DVD and Toshiba was thinking of throwing in the towel would they have done it if MS was not there telling them they had a chance at killing BD?

100% BS

what specs where from day 1? do you mean TL-51 which got anounced a year after launch with a "maybe it will work" or TL-45 which got anounced 6months before with a "maybe it will work"? Or even RC which they told consumers "we have none but to studios "it will come soon"?

They went RC free for the launch because even though the plan was to implement it (look at the DVD forum meetings) it was not decided how before it launched (funny for something you consider a finished spec) and thought it would be useful to con idiots into buying a player "look it is RC free" then once it catches on a bit BOOM, the disks have RC and you are screwed. On the other hand it also made many studios stay away from HD DVD, look at NL, they released Pan on HD DVD last year but none of the good new films which only came out on BD because it has RC.

These stores weren't making squat on HD DVD either. Fun that you neglect to mention that.

I would bet that both would have failed without Internet.

Oh brother! Not again

1st) About the B&M not making money

Videogame consoles generally don't have high markups. The B&M make up for that by selling accessories, controllers, memory cards & games. With the PS3 it's even better because they can also sell Blu-Ray movies. Good games on the PS3 are here and many more are coming. Let's not forget that the Crapbox360 hardly had any good games to speak of until about 9-12 months after its launch (how soon we forget).

2nd) About the specs being finalized

A finalized turd (HD DUD), is still a turd

HD DUD prioritized useless gimmicks over substance, content and quality (which it could not provide given its limited 30gig capacity & 36mbps bitrate)

Blu-Ray concentrated on what was IMPORTANT:

-Getting BD50 in line (happened 4 months after it was launched)
-Providing HIGH QUALITY video encodes and LOSSLESS audio on nearly all of it's releases

All the other "placebo" gimmicks were always going to come for Blu-Ray... whenever they got around to it (NOT A PRIORITY AT ALL).

The VAST majority of Blu-Ray players out there are PS3's and, once DTS-HD MA is introduced via firmware update later this year, it will have EVERY feature anybody could possibly want + room to grow. I'd rather be constantly and continually be pleasantly surprised with all these firmware upgrades (the PS3 is the gift that keeps on giving) then have a "supposedly" finalized P.O.S.

3rd) About Region free

Region free was NOT a benefit it was a hindrance as then dual Studios responded by delaying indefinitely HD DUD releases vs. Blu-Ray releases until the movies had completed their worldwide theatrical runs.
There are a plethora of foreign Blu-Ray movies that are coded "region free" and ready for you to import if you so wish.

BOTTOM LINE --> The ONLY thing HD DUD EVER did right was DYING!
(February 19th 2008 R.I.H.)

P.S. RIH = Rest In Hell

Really the only correct move the HD DVD consortium made in this war was manipulating the Internet. Without the viral marketing and clever lies spread by HD DVD "insiders", this format war would have been over much sooner than it actually took. The BDA waged a conventional strategy by saturating the retail space and locking up key content providers to exclusivity. The HD DVD PRG decided early on they couldn't win a fair fight against BD so they decided to buy off key dvd and a/v discussion forums that make up the bulk of early adopters. By controlling the discussion they fooled many of the sheep on these types of forums. I suspect Microsoft was the entire impetus behind these tactics as they have done similar things in other industries. The truth eventually prevailed, thankfully.

most definitely the internet helped. i also think that Blu-ray will take over DVD much sooner than DVD took over VHS due to the internet.
