You can do a base calibration on the input, but every device is different

Just used the disc it came via netflix today and I am a bit disapointed. It really didn't do much more for me then the sony system included in all sony blurays. Granted I didn't have the filters but I found that the explanations were too short and didn't do a good job of explaining what to do in lay mans terms. My biggest dissapointment was the relatively short amount of time it gives you to pause in order to calibrate and their system of telling you when to pause is a bit intrusive. What happens is a pause icon shows up in the middle of the screen. Now you can't pause while the icon is there because it will show up and block the calibration screen but if you wait till it disappears the calibration screen is either gone or in the middle of modifying itself so it is no longer accurate.

All in all I wish I hadn't ordered it from amazon because it was just a waste of money.

Canceling your order because someone else didn't like it?

I think it's great. I was surprised with how well it's done.

Of course,.. My display needs Focus, Geometry, and Grey Scale all done from scratch so it's maybe more useful for me than for most.

If I had a LCD flat panel or something not so adjust-able I would likely stick to the Sony patterns or something similarly basic.

Yah, I'm a sheep. Baaaaaa! :-)

ATM I only have an LCD, and judging by what you wrote, I should wait until I get a plasma TV. No wrries, I'm sure DVE will still be available in a few months; I can get it then! :-)

netflix sounds like a good way to try this disc out. still not enough opinions on it yet to justify a basically blind buy...

No they don't come with an explanation, but their are tons of web sites out there that can provide detailed instructions on how to use those screens. Or you can just search this forum I have found at least 2 threads explaining how to use the sony test patterns.

With a LCD HDTV,...

The Sony patterns or even better the Rat-something setup screens should be enough.

Afterall the only things you can adjust are brightness, contrast, sharpness, color (saturation) and Hue... (And if the set was designed properly the sharpness, color and hue would not be applicable to HD signals anyway)

Of course... DVE has a lot of great information for anyone and the audio setup is useful too.

I'm very happy with this new DVE and it's a must have for me but renting it may indeed be a great way to see if you want it or not.

I ordered DVE from buy.com with their was also a $10 coupon for signing up for google checkout. So I got it for a little over $10 free shipping.

I am interested to see how this affects my 50" Plasma and DMP-30.

I am interested to learn about optimizing the hook up as well as PQ.

I received mine from Amazon last night but won't be using it until the weekend when I have enough time to devote to the procedures uninterrupted!

no doubt.

you don't even really need to search...Sticky: Calibrate Your HDTV. "How To Use Color Bars"

But without the color filter its even harder to use.

Im just saying, for a beginner who definitely needs to calibrate their setup DVE is a great source. Is it the holy grail of disc calibration? maybe not...but its one of the best out and comes with somewhat of a decent explanation.
