That's not what I meant. I already own the movie (Japanese version) and I'm very happy with it, however I anticipate that there will be many disappointed people after the US version is released. People will be blaming the poor PQ on the 25G disc and the MPEG2 encode when in reality neither are to blame.

Wicky hit it on the nail with his comment.

Yup. A lot of 80's movies have a similar low resolution, flat look from the film used during that time. I just watched Wall Street on BD and it comes to mind too (though it definitely looks better than the DVD!).

Like Wicky said, it's gonna fall in the Robocop tier--a definite improvement over DVD, but not exactly in the Blade Runner tier either.
The colors are much bolder--specially the jungles look nice in this release. Grain is of course present, and fluctuates every so often. I'm satisfied with the release, because the DVD was horrible and I needed a decent copy of this movie in my collection.

I'm sorry but the old "it's a 1980's movie so the resolution is low" excuse just doesn't wash.

Sure a lot of advancement in film stocks and camera systems has occurred since the 1980s. Nevertheless, a lot of movies made in the 1980's looked great in movie theaters and should look pretty great on Blu-ray as well. The problem is not enough effort is being put behind getting those movies encoded to the format. It sounds to me like this one just got pushed through a HD-quality telecine and given the "good enough" treatment. A good digital intermediate work flow using the original camera elements or best elements available would yield the best quality results. Also keep in mind, this was a movie that Fox supported with 70mm Dolby mag prints in its original release.

The description of this Predator single layer BD reminds me of how various "early adopters" of DVD were sold on various bare bones DVDs from 1997-1999. Remember those early DTS DVDs with the audio at "full" bit rate but devoid of any extras?

I have a copy of Predator on DVD, but I won't be buying this BD version. I'll wait for the BD double or triple dip before doing anything.

But Bullseye, is this old title with no extras and substandard PQ worth $27.95?

I agree, but do you really think they would make the effort to go back to the original elements and send them through the DI workflow and present us with a new pristine version like Blade Runner? I don't think so. As far as I know only Ridley Scott bothered to do that--I know of no other director who puts as much effort when their films are presented for home video. I think this 'good enough' version of Predator will probably be the best we ever get.

Unless they release a collectors edition, which would be the best thing to wait for.

List of upcoming FOX releases with ZERO to MINIMAL extras and lackluster PQ.

1) Ronin
2) Predator
3) Commando

I don't care too much about extras but can't accept MPEG-2 encodes on BD-25 with lackluster PQ.

For movies that I know I will watch over and over again I like extras. Like Blade Runner, or T2. And the Predator DVD has awsome extra's so I dont see why the blu ray version doesn't.

And the low PQ is no excuse. If Blade Runner can do it, and still cost 30 bucks WITH 3 disc's of extra's, Then Predator can too!

had to cancel this one on pre-order. for $27.95 at amazon, that's just too steep for a marginal improvement and no extras over the SD-DVD.

heck - i forgot I even pre-ordered this, so thanks to this thread for the reminder!

BTW - were there 2 or 3 predator movies? (not counting the alien vs predator movies which i have not seen and have no interest in). amazon recycles descriptions for the SD-DVD version, but had a little video clip option to view scenes from "all 3 predator movies".

There are only two movies. First is with Arny, the 2nd is with Gloover.

I'll be passing on this, even though I really like the movie. Maybe during a BOGO or other sale, but not at $27.95. Hopefully whenever they get around to Aliens it'll be AVC/BD50 with seamless branching...

Regards,
I guess a question I should have asked previously . . . is the lackluster video because of its source or because the Blu-ray wasn't authored up to snuff? If the source is crap, a la Robocop, and this is truly the best presentation it will most likely have, then that's one thing. If it's a conscious choice by Fox to put out a sub-par product, that's quite another.

Unless Fox was willing to make an major investment in restoring Predator with a full-blown Lowry restoration the source material is never going to look incredible like Blade Runner does currently. I will not be holding my breath for anything like that. But this upcoming release really should have been released a long time ago. I have no doubt we will see another Predator BD that betters the upcoming U.S. release at some distant time. The question one has to ask one's self is can you wait another two years before seeing Predator in HD.

Greetings,

It appears to be source related. I finished watching it this morning and will get the review posted either tomorrow or Tuesday.
