Neither Folding@home nor PS3 games are designed to spare enough performance for the other to be run simultaneously. F@h only spares what's necessary for music playback, a single-tab web browser, Remote Play video encode+streaming and other systemwide background tasks.

Background downloading stops when you take a game online and I think HDD streaming-heavy games probably pause it too.

I agree I think he did not understand the concept of the processor working over time doing the calculations making it impossible, unless he thought it only cost internet bandwidth.

You would not have enough resources to play the game in single player, and thats before even talking about trying to start a multiplayer game.

Its hardware intensive, uses alot of the cpu power performing mathematical calculations that are extremely complicated and processor intensive.

Not if your tieing up the entire set of system resources, if your using the spu and try to issue a command from a game to that spu what happens?

Alot of games are starting to use the spus instead of focusing on the ppus and from what I recall folding@home uses both the ppu and spu.

But I could always be wrong.

He was talking about running folding@home in the background and figured it would be fine but would possible lag in multiplayer, I told him that it would not work in either case.

*edit, it would be impossible to could him, so instead I told him.

The new 2.3 firmware will be available prior to the launch of the new PSN store. It is idiotic for Sony to launch the firmware on the 17th since GT5 prologue (which is available on the store) will be available as a digital download that day. It may ship with the retail copy of GT5 prologue (4/15) like Ratchet and Clank TOD did with firmware 1.4. They would overload their servers with downloads from the PSN and firmware updates otherwise.
The COD4 map pack will come out 2 weeks after the new store arrives since the 360 exclusivity ends then. I think that Sony planed the update at this time on purpose, the COD4 maps are exclusive at this time and only 4 Rockband tracks will be or have been released during this period. If you haven't read people were able to force a 1.0 Home beta d/l that is alleged to launch when the store updates (Home does NOT require a firmware update, just a d/l).
I'm curious how the Rockband in-game music store is going to work since the store uses the old PSN store interface.

It's the Gamer Advisory Panel and it's members are ONLY picked by SCEA. They pick you to join, there are no sign-ups

I know they added the ability to have your system automatically shutdown after folding, but as far as I'm aware we still don't have the ability to have it auto shutdown after the background downloads have finished.

Anyone think this will be in a near future update? And if it's already available can someone please tell me how to do it?

I think it depends on whether folding@home runs just as an XMB task or a game. I believe it is set-up to be run as a game and has all the rights within those parameters. If that is true, the PS3 would be able to perform smaller tasks like playing music, surfing the web, etc on the OS reserved SPE.

SInce the PS3 has an in-order processor, the other code could severely disrupt the efficiency of the other code running on it. I think you would have to wall off another SPE from the rest of them to complete larger tasks like video chat with 5 video streams. Of course, this is assuming the OS can't grab a second SPE when needed. It's public knowledge that the OS can grab a 2nd SPE when need. But, it hasn't been made public if that is true, when a game is running (I doubt it can...I can't see the need).

I won't even go down the road of thinking F@H is not runnin as a game application, because that would mean it is only running on 2 SPEs. That would be too outlandish to entertain.

all meh. dvr will never come to the us.

it would be nice to make my own folders so i can group movies, music and games the way i want. be nice to be able to go more than 2 folders deep as well. auto off on the controller is a must. auto power off after all downloads are complete is a must.

not that there is anything wrong with being gay andproud, but it's Gamer Advisory Panel and that was the only wa to get in on the Home Beta and easy way to get the Warhawk Beta. As someone said, invite only. It's basically a closed forum like blu-ray.com but about video gaming or the PS3 as a BD player only. It's cool sometimes when they have awesome contests and such, but I like the Retail Loyalty Site better, you get free awesome swag just for knowing about PS and PS games.
I've been on the GAP for 5 years now.
On topic, the update is coming next week. Extreme.

Wtf are you talking about? Profile 3.0? Dolby TrueHD? The PS3 already decodes TrueHD, and it would NEED HDMI 1.3a or better to bitstream it, so that's a no-go unless they update the hardware. And Profile 3.0.....does not exist. That link says nothing about either one of these.
